TL;DR: as a 20 year member that's never had a problem, I am being punished for being considerate. I was sweaty, so I purchased clothing rather than try it on, because the staff member reassured me that I could return them. Upon trying to return the clothing for a refund, I'm being refused and treated rudely by the club manager Danielle. A few days ago, as I was leaving the gym after my workout, I noticed a number of clothing items on a clearance rack. I picked out three pieces of clothing that I wanted to try on, but because I was sweaty from my workout, it wouldn't be right for me to try the items on. I explained the situation to an employee at the front desk, and inquired about the return policy. The employee assured me that I could purchase the items, try them on at home, and bring them back for a refund if they didn't work out within 14 days, as long as I also brought the receipt with me. I purchased the three items from that employee and took them home with me. After trying the items on, I didn't care for any of them, so I brought them back with me two days later at my next visit. I was told I would have to come back when there is a manager onsite, and that a manager is on-site between 8:30AM and 4PM. This morning, I returned with the items. I was informed that there are no refunds, only exchanges, which was a total surprise. One of the employees checked the receipt to see who it was that told me I could return the items, and upon seeing who it was, stated "Oh, he's brand new here, he must not know our policy." I was informed that I would have to wait for a manager for any kind of resolution, so I waited for the manager Erin to show up, who I was told arrives between 8:30 and 9:00. At 9:15 the staff informed me that they didn't think Erin would be in soon. I informed the staff that I would return later in the day. On my lunch break, I returned with the items. This is now my THIRD attempt to return these items, and I'm having to take even more time out to take care of this issue. I finally get to talk to the manager, Erin, who informed me that even though her employee stated that I would be able to return the items I bought for a refund, their actual policy is exchange-only, and that there is no way for her to give me a refund. She then pointed out that this is printed on the receipt as well. However, I would never have purchased these items if their ACTUAL return policy was conveyed to me. I only received a receipt with the return policy AFTER I purchased the items, and had I taken the word of the employee that a refund would not be a problem. I could not conceive that this employee would be giving me totally incorrect information that I would then have to corroborate with the fine print on the receipt. Erin apologized for the mistake of her employee, but stated that she could only give me store credit that I could use to buy supplements or apparel. When I stated that this was unacceptable, and that she should do the right thing and honor the word of her employee, she walked away, and Danielle (the club manager) came over. She started out being nice and polite, but she also told me the same thing: no refunds, only exchanges. When I protested that this was unfair because it was her employee's mistake, not mine, she became rude and sarcastic. She condescendingly told me that she "does a lot of shopping" and always gets the return policy in writing. She refused to accept responsibility for her employee and stated she doesn't know what the employee that I purchased the items from actually said to me. She implied that I was being dishonest, and that "everyone always says that so they can get their money back." I said that we can ask the employee in question about what happened the next time he's going to be working. She stated that isn't going to happen because she "doesn't want the risk of an altercation". I was shocked by this comment, so I ask her "Are you serious?" Danielle replied "Yes I am serious." She then had her employee write down the phone number for member services and stated I should call them instead.
