Complexity - 1
Living things are perhaps, at root, energy conversion machines. Think about if you were creating a universe and you had two options: one to design everything from day one, the other to put in places machines to do the work for you. Looking at ourselves as h...

A boringly predictable universe
Perhaps the most disappointing thing about the universe is how boringly predictable it is. We keep making movies and writing novels about mysterious forces, super villains with super powers, aliens from distant planets; but in real life no little green mart...

Thank you
I've spent this Saturday morning listening to some great music on TuneIn, and I just want to say Thank you. Thank you to the artists who sung the songs, to the lyricists who penned them and the musicians who played the music. Thank you to the App developers...

Of trees and things
Sitting in a meeting today I chanced to look out the window and noticed the leaves of a very large tree gently swaying in the breeze. It is always fascinating to see how every bit of the universe keeps on moving quite oblivious to the rest of it. This tree ...

I remember panic attacks from the 2000s, from the 90s, and the 80s. Panic attacks so bad that I thought at the time all was lost, that it was the end. Clearly the fact that I am still here indicates how it was, in fact, not...

Here I sit, surrounded by my electronic toys. The iPad playing the music, the phone alerting me to incoming texts and calls, the laptop my outlet to the world, the television showing the umpteenth rerun of a vaguely familiar movie - long forgotten but still...

So much is possible. So many things to do, to see, to be. But the fear of the unknown conspires with the drug of the familiar to keep us where we are. Where does fear come from? Fear of change, fear of missing out, it's really fear of regret. We fear what '...

Planet Hopping
Curiosity is inherent to human nature. We love exploring: mountains, oceans, and of course planets. We just seem to have this urge to keep going farther and farther. Where does this come from ? this desire to wander farther ? Perhaps it has its roots in the...

'Twas the night before launch... NASA MAVEN’s last night on Earth before launching to Mars. The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket with NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft onboard is seen at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Space Launch Complex 41, Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, Cape Canaveral, Fla. Forecasters from the U.S. Air Force 45th Weather Squadron continue to predict a 60 percent chance of favorable weather for the launch of MAVEN at 1:28 p.m. EST Monday. MAVEN is scheduled to liftoff atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V at the beginning of a two hour launch window. Teams are working no technical issues and the countdown is targeted to pick up from the T-6 hour, 20 minute mark at 6:28 a.m. Monday.
