Check the statistics. Police shoot black males more frequently than men of any other demographic. FBI crime statistics bear this out. I'm not saying others aren't affected, I'm saying that a glaring disproportion exist and we as a county can't ignore that. The point is that the disproportion exists as a result of racism. Pain and simple. Our allies should not tell us to ignore that fact.

Hey folks: I'm launching a new podcast today!  SO excited. First guest is Tanya Selvaratnam, author of The Big Lie: Motherhood, Feminism, and the reality of the Biological Clock.

Here's a nice article on the podcast launch:

As we prepare to enter 2014, I send you a pair of magic glasses, so you can see the love directed at you every day; and to filter the inevitable disappointments so you recognize their gifts as well. I wish you reunions with old friends and release of any resentments with old foes. I wish you love, peace and happiness, and the same for those around you.

I'm doing a Kickstarter for my podcast of intimate conversations with people making change, from Gloria Steinem to Joi Ito. We have been in talks with the Schomburg Center (on Black Culture) about doing our first ever live podcast there. And we're moving ahead with plans for a spring event, date TBD. New incentives; same cause -- dialogue, across all boundaries of race, gender, sexual orientation; creative contact; and now live engagement.

So, we're in the final six days of our Kickstarter. We are planning a spring live event with the Schomburg (the amazing institution on Black culture, run by Khalil Muhammad). My goal with One With Farai (and we are booking some amazing guests right now) is really to pivot this project and engage with people live, as I did in Austin last week and Seattle the week before. We just added new incentives to offer reserved seats (plus downloads) for the...

I'm just about out of my Shirley Chisholm stamps so I'll get some Harvey Milk ones... Whoever is making these decisions at the USPS is doing some strong work...

On what would have been the late San Francisco supervisor and civil rights icon's 84th birthday, some paused Thursday to remark on impactful social change and recommit to forward progress

"We called ourselves the U.N." How race played out in my college years, re: #ITooAmHarvard. via @washingtonpost http://ow.ly/ujp5B
The writer, who attended Harvard in the late 1980s, identifies with the students protesting against racism, and recalls a campus rife with many different conflicts.

Kinda depressing and totally brilliant: the NYT's year in best photos.
Amid the violence and politics, there were also pristine moments that remind us of our greater potential.

Everybody who won't get fired for doing so, indulge yourself in 30 seconds of mindless goofy movement. Do a dance. Do a headstand. Stick out your tongue and wiggle it at the moon.

Life is short and our bodies only last us a while, so don't forget to enjoy the goofy part of being human.

And to quote Mary Oliver: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

The wildness often leaves us in childhood. So imagine you're a child, and give yourself rein to just be.
