The applicant had wonderfully weaved a story of failure and retribution with high points and low points marked carefully in the 500-word essay. It is not every day that you see an MBA aspirant skillfully playing with words, but one glaring problem stood out in the essay. The Boss, who was the opposing force in the essay, was described in just three words. The characterization felt one-dimensional in an otherwise masterful essay.

If you have seen Memento, you know the power of Chronology, to be more precise – the reverse chronology. What the peculiar narrative does to the audience is that it forces them to miss the loo break. Every scene, clue, or characters in the sequence create questions in our mind. Did the new character kill the wife? Is the guy who is helping the hero, the real villain?

Wouldn't we love if the essay reviewer were that hooked to your narrative about getting into Consulting or Finance?

More than emotions, evaluating an essay is an intense exercise. With the tiny 3-pounder brain taking up 20% of our total energy, it is no wonder that as humans, we don’t want to waste our mental energy on trivial activities. We would rather spend most of our energy on survival – getting food and avoiding danger. There is no difference between the diligent reviewer and the quick reader. Both would like to avoid the trivial essays, and spend most of their times on the articulate ones. Why? It gives them a better social status.

The rivalry between UNC and Duke is not limited to College basketball; the competition as a favorite MBA destination is much fiercer. While the casual researcher favors UNC for the good-looking crowd, serious applicants should consider five factors: ranking, curriculum, location, class profile, and post-MBA jobs.

Empathy is not a learned skill. It’s part of our DNA where we feel what others are feeling. The study on empathy took a hysterical high with “Mirror neurons,” when Graduate Students at the University of Parma, Italy, accidently found out how empathy is ingrained empathy in monkeys. The students were conducting studies on macaque monkeys by implanting electrodes in their brain. During the lunch break, they accidently kept the electrodes on the monkey and came back with food.

First, take pride in your academic achievements: you are above the HBS Class median in GMAT by 10 points, in GPA by .12 points, and you are a top MBA Applicant if I assume that you are part of the big G or the big F when you say “Top IT Company.”

Harvard Full-time MBA is a 24-month program with the latest class enrolling 913 students in the Boston Campus. The full-time MBA is a residential program with a focus on hands-on experience through the Case Study Method and FIELD projects. By encouraging students to exercise their knowledge on real-world problems, Harvard Business Schools has created a learning environment that encourages Entrepreneurship and leadership. Even though the class size is huge compared to other top MBA programs, the school leadership has set up small learning groups of 80-90, to  mimic the efficiency of lean teams.
