A lawsuit against the mugshot industry passed it's first big hurdle -- a motion to dismiss. The Judge dismissed a few counts, but allowed the case to move forward on the basis of the Right to Publicity laws in Illinois and Florida, a specific mugshot related law in Illinois, and the Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices law in Florida.

Mugshot publishing websites in Florida will be subject to new rules on July 1, 2018, but the first lawsuit has already been filed. Two of the biggest mugshot publishing websites have settled with the plaintiff in the Broward County case and provided the legal system with a preview of the litigation to come.

Taking action outside of the normal legislative avenue, President Obama made moves to reduce recidivism rates nationwide. Acting through executive agencies, tens of millions of dollars will provide hope for the millions that re-enter their communities after serving time in prison. Thanks, Obama.

Signing what will hopefully by the first of several criminal justice reform related bills, Governor Rick Snyder approved SB0251, a law sponsored and championed by State Senator John Proos. SB0251 will allow juveniles to enter into what amounts to alternative sentencing, avoiding a criminal record.

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled the laws in at least eleven different states violated the Fourth Amendment by criminalizing the act of refusing to allow a warrantless blood test in association with a DUI arrest. A breathalyzer test, on the other hand, did not impact a person's privacy the same way.
