Happy November everyone! (this will be a long one, so please bear with me)
For some of us not buying anything comes easy, for others not so much, especially during the month of November when the world tries to frenzy us into all sorts of holiday shopping, including tactics like #blackfriday
. So for this month, I thought of something that we can all do that will not only make a big difference in your life, but also for our planet. This was a spur of the moment idea as I came across the article shared 2 days ago about the burning of Indonesia’s forests: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/oct/30/indonesia-fires-disaster-21st-century-world-media

This is just one more nail in the coffin for our planet, and I wanted to inspire us to do something to be part of the solution right now. It is easy living as if we don’t have to change when we are removed from any challenging times or “disasters”, but more and more we need to realize that we are not removed. Our Earth is our common home and various challenging times are impacting more of us collectively, and more frequently. We all too commonly spread around the words "we are one" but how well are we applying them? Our Earth is hurting and needs our help now. Not tomorrow, not in your kids’ generation, or in the next century, but right now. And so this idea came to me of the “November No-buy" #challenge
You don't need to go protest in the streets or fall into an apathetic state within the confines of your own life. You just need to re-consider your everyday actions and choices. So many of the problems we face in this world, both on a personal and collective level are tied to our insatiable materialistic hunger. As we know, most of the things that we buy only superficially fill the deep voids so many of us live with each day, while they strip our planet of its precious resources and create unthinkable conditions for other humans and animals. Not to mention, all too much of the buying is so unconscious, habitual, and done out of an illusory sense of obligation.
So this November, I invite you to consider to CHOOSE to not buy ANY "stuff".
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Don’t buy anything during the month of November, aside from basic necessities, namely groceries.
2. If you must get someone a gift this month, consider only gifts that will teach, enrich or expand someone on a physical, mental, or emotional level.
3. If you are thinking of what happens for the December holiday, typically known as Christmas, reflect this month on how you can do things differently this year. Talk with family and friends and get others on board. All too many will be all too happy to not have the stress and pressure of buying gifts, and ones that all too frequently get returned or not used. Ultimately go back to point 2 and consider experiential gifts only (or ones you can make).
So what do you say, are you up for a different kind of challenge? Are you willing to benefit from saving the money and time that you would on shopping and buying stuff, to have more time for things that really matter, and perhaps put that money to better use, like buying organic food that all too many of us complain we don’t have the money for? Are you willing to help our world, by helping yourself?
Choose to do something radically different this year and liberate yourself from the stress and chaos that is associated with the shopping frenzy of this time of the year. You don't need more clothes. Your kids don't need more toys. The electronics you have are just fine. And your home does not require more knick nacks, or candles or dishes, or what have you. Learn how to work with and be happy with what you have.
So are you in? One person, one family, one community at a time, we can and are making a difference!
Spread and share this challenge with whomever you can and wherever you can. Share your own images, stories, or whatever else you wish. This is an “open-source” initiative for all “evolving beings” to take part in :)
p.s. I will post reminders and motivators about this challenge throughout the month and practical tips for life beyond #shopping
