I enjoyed how many made-up words there were in this article that itself was about new words, like "zeitgeisty" and "linguisticky":
A dispatch from the place where the nation’s most well-regarded grammarians, etymologists and language enthusiasts gather to talk shop.

Some folks are trying to popularize stand-up in China. This line on what's off-limits in America amuses me because the unspoken message is that these are GREAT jokes for a Chinese audience: "There's kind of some limits in every culture," [Joe Wong] said. "In America, there are things you can't talk about onstage as well: you can't make fun of, say, the disabled, or women, or minorities."

These portraits are amazing - an individual life and the life of a nation flashing by:
In 2007, Chinese photography collector Tong Bingxue received a phone call from a man seeking an appraisal for a recently purchased book of photo portraits. As Bingxue recounts in A Life in Portrait...

Just wrote a new blog post!
Six years ago, while doing research for my slang book, I read a great non-fiction book called "Shanghai: The Rise and Fall of a Decadent City" by Stella Dong. One passage described American sailors...

Oh my goodness this is the best story ever. Every time I stopped laughing, because I thought the story had ended, a NEW twist would come, and the laughs would begin anew...
This really weird thing happened to my phone and an even weirder thing happened after. A continuation of: Who Is This Man And Why Are His Photos Showing Up On My Phone.

I bookmarked this awhile back but now have no memory of where I saw it or what exactly it is, even. I guess it's a post about Chinese slang phrases appearing in Urban Dictionary that's gone around the Chinese internet?

你知道you can you up,no can no BB是什么意思吗?今年4月9日才被录入的“you can you up(你行你上啊)”在美国在线俚语词典Urban Dictionary中被发现,解释中还“附赠”了配套用语“no can no BB”(不行就别乱喷)。该词语出现,就收到了290多个赞,热度可见一斑。 1. you can you up, no can no BB 你行你上啊, 不行别逼逼 ...

I find this really funny. In 525 BC Persia invaded Egypt & stole all their best artists, so Egyptians had to settle for cruddy artists for their funerals. "The collar wrapped around the top of the coffin contains two creatures that look almost fishlike. The artist was likely trying to draw falcons, a symbol of the god Horus, but drew them very poorly, Gibson said."
Archaeologists have discovered a bizarre scene on an Egyptian coffin that was likely the result of all its good artists having been deported. Left with a bunch of amateurs, it appears that the Egyptian elite had to settle for dud funerary paintings...

Conversation next to me at brunch yesterday that was making my head silently explode:
(Something about a Chinese class and some sort of party or performance related to it)
Person A: I want to wear something Chinese for it. I need to get one of those triangle hats!
Person B: (Uncomfortable laughter)...well, just make sure you don't do anything racist!
Person A: Oh no I would never do anything racist. I love Chinese people!
