Just last month the European ministers for justice and home affairs were unable to find an agreement to relocate 40,000 refugees and asylum seekers. The quota scheme was supposed to be a relief for the frontline countries like Italy and Greece. France and Great Britain were among those countries that opposed mandatory quotas. The Italian Euranet Plus member EuranetPlus - Radio 24 interviewed Matteo Villa, a researcher at ISPI, the Italian Institute for International Political Studies, to understand the differences between the solidarity invoked this time and in vain last month by Italy and Greece. (podcast in Italian)
At the Eurotunnel every night thousands of refugees try to sneak on the trains, between trucks and cars, to get to Great Britain. At the same time, France and Britain were part of the countries that opposed the distribution of refugees through mandatory quotas as proposed by the European Commission. So what are the differences…

Serbia is under pressure - and the handling of the thousands of refugees crossing the country could be important on Belgrade's way to join the European Union.
Migration was the topic dominating the EU-Balkan summit in Vienna. “But this agreement is a Yes to Europe, a Yes to a European compromise, and is not a Yes to this government, which handled the negotiations partly in a populist, un-European and irresponsible manner,“ the leader of the Greens said. Nevertheless, in the end, the German Bundestag decided in favour of the third aid package for Greece, reports our German member AMS-NET. (audio story in English + German podcast)
The members of the German Bundestag will probably not forget the summer break 2015 soon. For the second time their vacations were interrupted. Instead of holidays in Greece, it was again all about the rescue package for Greece. After a two-hour debate, the German parliament in Berlin approved the third aid package for Greece –…

Yes, there is a new top issue in Europe, reports our German member AMS-NET. It is, however, not the subject of refugees, as you might expect, but rather the closely related issue of immigration. Immigration has currently even overtaken the economic situation as the most frequently cited concern at EU level, according to the latest Eurobarometer poll. (podcast in German)
Next to the Greek crisis, this has been the most talked about topic in Europe for months now - the unresolved refugee crisis. That the issue still moves many Europeans is also reflected in the new statistics released by the latest EU-sponsored Eurobarometer public opinion poll. Yes, there is a new top issue in Europe.…
