The year I worked in an 8-4-4 school system seemed to have an appropriate calendar. School year started in January, 3 weeks or so off in March or April, 3 weeks off in August, and basically all of December off. In the middle of each session was a built-in 4 day weekend called "half-term" As a teacher it seemed right.
