Commercial diaper cream can be made of ingredients that can irritate a baby’s delicate skin. This easy recipe is simple, natural, and great for soothing and softening skin in a safe way. While coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer, the majority of the soothing benefits are due to the addition of Lavender and Tea Tree essential oil.

¼ cup virgin coconut oil
5 drops Lavender oil
3 drops Melaleuca (Tea Tree) oil

1. Melt coconut oil in glass cup using microwave or double boiler.
2. Add essential oils and stir briefly.
3. Allow mixture to cool to restore the original consistency of the coconut oil.
4. Store in a sealable glass container and leave in cool place. Apply as needed.

Tip: This recipe makes 2 ounces, and should last as long as the expiration date on the bottom of your essential oil bottle, or for the shelf-life of your coconut oil of choice.

Why You Should Use Essential Oils Daily

While essential oils can (and should) be used for occasional health issues, perhaps their most useful application is for that of maintaining your health. Think of oils as you would a dietary supplement; when you use supplements you are doing so to give your body the nutrients it needs to function properly. While there are differences from person to person in usage preference, it is generally accepted that using the oils consistently is important to getting your desired results.

Dr. David K. Hill states, “Using a variety of essential oils on a regular basis could be more significant than focusing on oil selection or specific application methods. Routine and deliberate application of essential oils can often increase and even sustain health benefits.”

Some people in the aromatherapy industry may express concern over regular daily use of essential oils, concerned that they are too potent. We find this belief to be unfounded when oils are used safely. Although we know that more research remains to be done, the specific health benefits of regular essential oil use have already been well demonstrated, both clinically and anecdotally. Many scientific reviews and studies verify that appropriate doses of essential oils are safe and efficacious.

Incorporate essential oils into your daily life and support your body in a natural and safe way with the following considerations:

Quality. The oils you use matter. As the world leader of essential oils, doTERRA strives to ensure that only the highest quality oil is bottled for distribution. This attention to quality does two things: One, in comparison to using only the pure oil, using altered essential oils dramatically increases the possibility of sensitivity or reactions, and decreases the effectiveness of the oil. And two, it means that a small does is sufficient. We will talk more about the appropriate dosage below.

Dosage. Just as you shouldn’t take more than the recommended dose of vitamins or minerals, essential oils are potent and a very small dose is more than sufficient. Whether used in a diffuser, on your skin, or in a Veggie Capsule, no more than a few drops are needed at a time. See our chart of recommended dosage to see how it differs for adults and children.

Variety. Take a look at the many ways to use individual essential oils, and you’ll see that many benefits are similar. However, changing up the oils you use rather than sticking to one or two can be beneficial, just like having variety in your diet. Another way trying new oils benefits you is you can find what oils work best with your body’s chemistry for the benefits you want.

Dilution. Some oils are incredibly potent, like the phenols and aldehydes groups (Cassia, Oregano, to name a few). These are known as “hot oils” and should always be diluted. But, aside from these dilution is an excellent method to use with any oil to increase the surface area and slow down absorption to prevent any possible sensitivities. Find out more about dilution ratios and carrier oils.

Age. Young children and the elderly will require special precautions when using essential oils. Their skin is typically more delicate and sensitive; in these cases, appropriate dilution modifications or essential oil substitutions for less strong oils (like Spearmint instead of Peppermint) can be made.

There are four different types of essential oil diffusers, including nebulizing, ultrasonic, heat, and evaporative diffusers. Each essential oil diffuser has its own unique method for getting essential oils into the air so you can utilize their therapeutic benefits. From these choices, how do you decide which one would work best for you? To help you determine what to choose, we’ve broken down how each essential oil diffuser works and some pros and cons for diffusing oils with that method.

A nebulizing essential oil diffuser breaks down the essential oil into tiny particles through the use of a high velocity, pressurized air stream and jet nozzle. When the essential oil is released, it goes into the air in a fine mist. This method does not alter the chemical composition or the scent—it diffuses the entire oil at once instead of in stages. (Some essential oil diffusion methods release the more volatile components first and then the heavier later.) The particle size is also small enough to be easily inhaled and used for aromatherapy.

PROS: Nebulizers use no heat or water, yet disperse the entire oil into the air for optimal therapeutic benefits.

CONS: Nebulizers are often the most expensive essential oil diffusers to use, and even sometimes to buy. Because these diffusers use only essential oil, they also use much more oil. Some models of nebulizing oil diffusers are noisy in comparison to other diffusers.

This popular type of essential oil diffuser uses water and electronic frequencies to create a fine mist from the essential oil and water. Ultrasonic vibrations are created by a small disk under the surface of the water which causes the essential oil to break up into tiny micro particles.

PROS: Ultrasonic models only use a small amount of essential oil, and no heat is used to generate the mist in an ultrasonic essential oil diffuser. This method also can act as both a diffuser and a humidifier, a helpful feature if you live in a drier climate. There is very little to no noise associated with ultrasonic diffusers, making them perfect for nighttime use.

CONS: Only a small fraction of the mist is essential oil, and it depends on the air current already in the room to disperse the oil. If you already live in a more humid place, you may not want to add more water to the air.
doTERRA has a few different options for ultrasonic diffusers. Give the Lotus, Petal, Aroma Lite, or Lumo essential oil diffuser a try.

As their name suggests, heat essential oil diffusers use heat elements to help the essential oil gradually evaporate into the air. Sometimes they may use the oil mixed with water. Some heat diffusers use very high levels of heat to cause a stronger aroma, however, the best heat diffusers will use a very low heat to avoid drastically changing the chemical constituents of the oils being diffused.

PROS: Diffusing using heat is an economical, yet efficient and silent way to spread the aroma of an essential oil throughout the room.

CONS: The heat used can change the properties of the oil at the molecular level. This means that the therapeutic or aromatic benefit of an oil may lessen or change entirely.
Evaporative diffusers

EVAPORATIVE DIFFUSION uses air flow to spread the scent of the essential oils into the area. A fan blows air through a filter, such as a tissue or a pad that has essential oils dropped onto it. The moving air causes the oil to evaporate quickly, and the air with the evaporated oil is blown into and around the room.

With this method, you will get the oil in segments; the lighter, more volatile components evaporate first, while the heavier components evaporate last.

PROS: Wind-blown diffusion can be a quiet way to quickly spread the oil’s aroma throughout the room.

CONS: It may not be as therapeutic of a method because all of the components of the whole oil are not diffused at the same time.
Regardless of the essential oil diffuser you choose, the aromas of essential oils have so much potential to influence your emotions and overall well-being for the better. In the end, each of these methods of diffusing will help you enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy in your home. Let us know which one you prefer in the comments!

10 Oils for Winter

Using essential oils can help alleviate much of the discomfort brought on by the changing seasons! Winter brings some of the darkest, coldest, and gloomiest days of the year. Here are our top 10 essential oils for wintertime.

Uplifting and Motivating: doTERRA Cheer®, doTERRA Motivate®, and Neroli Touch

Any oil in the doTERRA Emotional Aromatherapy™ System can be used to help alleviate negative emotions that arise during the winter, but two oils in particular can help bolster your mood when you are unhappy or discouraged. doTERRA Cheer Uplifting Blend combines citrus and spice oils to provide a boost when you need cheering up. doTERRA Motivate Encouraging Blend utilizes the calming and uplifting benefits of citrus and mint oils to energize you, give you courage to face pessimism and doubts, and help create feelings of self-assurance.
Another great oil for relieving occasional anxious or unsettled feelings is doTERRA Neroli Touch. Apply Neroli Touch to your palms and cup your hands over your nose, breathing deeply, to feel more relaxed and at peace. Use Neroli Touch, doTERRA Cheer, or doTERRA Motivate (or combinations of the three) on your wrists or the back of your neck to help lift your spirits and bring a little sunshine back into your day.

Smooth Skin: Rose Touch and Lavender

Cold, dry, and windy weather leaves skin dry and irritated. Rose oil is known to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections and has a calming and reassuring aroma. Use Lavender oil and doTERRA Rose Touch oil with your moisturizer to soothe, moisturize, and ease occasional irritation and dryness, bringing back a balance of moisture to your skin. Together these oils can be especially useful for soothing chapped knuckles, elbows and knees.

Well-being and Clear Breathing: doTERRA On Guard®, Eucalyptus, and Peppermint

The changing seasons brings an onslaught of environmental threats. To help protect against seasonal threats and support healthy immune function, diffuse doTERRA On Guard in your home. There are many great doTERRA On Guard products to aid in supporting healthy immune function.

A few oils to use to help promote clear breathing include Eucalyptus and Peppermint oil. Apply over the chest, add to steamy bathwater, or diffuse at night to aid in promoting feelings of open airways. Be careful to dilute both Eucalyptus and Peppermint for skin sensitivity. (For young or particularly sensitive essential oil users, consider using Melaleuca and Spearmint oil in place of Eucalyptus and Peppermint. Both are gentler oils that can assist in feelings of clear breathing.)

DIGESTION AND APPETITE: DigestZen® and Slim & Sassy®

Whether you have a New Year’s resolution to eat smarter, you are recovering from poor holiday eating, or you just want to give extra care to your digestive system, these two oils can help alleviate discomfort and support healthy digestive function.
Fennel, Peppermint, and Ginger are just a few of the oils starring in ZenGest (formerly called DigestZen), the “tummy tamer” blend. Put a few drops of ZenGest in your water or rub on your stomach or the bottom of your feet to help relieve occasional stomach discomfort.

Slim & Sassy blend not only helps to curb cravings and manage your appetite, but also helps support a healthy metabolism when taken internally. The aromas of Grapefruit and Cinnamon, along with Lemon, Peppermint, and Ginger, are also uplifting and comforting. A few drops of Slim & Sassy in a glass of cold water can help you manage cravings and ease discomfort.

Soon the new school term starts and children and teenagers will be back to school – with all its excitements and challenges. Having to focus and keeping attention in the classroom, being motivated and keeping on following, understanding and learning the new topics is far from easy! Parents nowadays know that it is much more challenging for students than it was 20 or 30 years ago, due to a completely different lifestyle, change in educational concepts and the ubiquity of technical devices and capabilities. Attention deficit issues like ADHD do their part to make it extremely hard for many students to follow the cirriculum....
