An indie author puzzles over how US Govt can deem Apple anti-competitive versus Amazon when Amazon would charge home $150 more to sell his book than Apple.

I wanted to move into a homeless shelter because I thought that girls who were homeless would be more likely to go out with me. I had this fantasy version of what a homeless shelter would be like. We&...

Somebody got a hold of a password protected report from LSAC which discusses the state of law school applications. Do you want to hear the good news? It’s too early to know the full scope of this law school application season, but the early numbers suggest that law school applications are going to be down. Way down. From Legal Skills Prof: The report indicates that as of 1/13/12 ABA applicants are down 16.7% and ABA applications are down 15.3% f...

Every few years, the MPAA’s lobbying power, rhetoric, and immense campaign contributions succeed in purchasing a bill in Congress to advance their agenda in a way that’s hostile to the technology industry and consumers. Their bills have had mixed success and usually die before being brought to a vote, but SOPA and PIPA came frighteningly close to becoming law. The internet-wide protest this week seems to have stalled their progress and probably ...

According to Dr. Ken Murray, doctors don't die like the rest of us. It's not a frequent topic of discussion, but doctors die, too. And they don't die like the rest of us. What's unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared to most Americans, but how little. For all the time they spend fending off the deaths of others, they tend to be fairly serene when faced with death themselves. They know exactly what is going to happen, they...

My blog post on digital ignorance...
Technology always involves tradeoffs. Every tool created by humans has situational strengths and situational weaknesses. The trick is to figure out how to balance the risks with the rewards. Then you can make intelligent decisions about how to use technology. Consider, for example, the question of computer security. Is it safe to use a computer that’s connected to the internet? Depends. If you don’t know how to avoid scams, and you leave the comp...

Well, I think for someone like your friend, the important question is who to hire for IT. It's fine to remain in ignorance, but that means you are stuck with what your IT person can (or is willing to) do. Trying something new, that his IT person doesn't support, is a recipe for disaster.

Unfortunately, many IT people don't want to support the cloud, because they can't make any money from it.

Mike Daisey’s Upcoming Venues All Defend Him (and suggest Ira Glass was lying, because that preserves the illusion that Daisey still has some credibility).
Daisey's Upcoming Venues All Defend Him As is now well known, Mike Daisey’s “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” has been performed since 2010 and covered by countless media outlets since,...

I enjoyed the Retraction episode which was a brilliant interview. I don't know why Mike Daisey cooperated with the interview to begin with, and then went back for a second interview. These venues are irresponsible with the truth, but so are many journalists. I appreciate that This American Life is trying to maintain their integrity, and do so in an entertaining way.

Blog post: Figuring out what my dad did for a living wasn't easy.
When I was six years old the teacher made all the kids in the class all stand up and say what our dads did for a living. I remember the moment because it was very embarrassing: I didn't know. I kn...

Internet For Lawyers originally shared:

We've updated our collection of decisions and orders in cases related to lawyers' use of e-discovery through social media sites for investigative and background research. It now includes more than a dozen cases, including one Virginia case in which an attorney was sanctioned $542,000 for advice given to a client regarding removal of information from the client's Facebook Profile, and a Minnesota case where the court allowed "service by publication" via social media.
We've assembled cases from various jurisdictions dealing with attorneys' use of social networking sites for investigative and background research.
