Today we’re making the Nik Collection available to everyone, for free.

Photo enthusiasts all over the world use the Nik Collection to get the best out of their images every day. As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free, so that now anyone can use it.

The Nik Collection is comprised of seven desktop plug-ins that provide a powerful range of photo editing capabilities -- from filter applications that improve color correction, to retouching and creative effects, to image sharpening that brings out all the hidden details, to the ability to make adjustments to the color and tonality of images.

Starting March 24, 2016, the latest Nik Collection will be freely available to download: Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine. If you purchased the Nik Collection in 2016, you will receive a full refund, which we’ll automatically issue back to you in the coming days.

We’re excited to bring the powerful photo editing tools once only used by professionals to even more people now.

Please read this.
As Marcello Truzzi, a renowned skeptic and professor of sociology in the United States, once said: “An extraordinary claim requires extraordinary proof.” This notion unfortunately doesn’t stop people the world over from believing things that are demonstrably untrue, and a new study published in the journal of Judgment and Decision Making shows that those who are more receptive to what the authors term as “bullshit” tend to be both less reflective...

This is fantastic - read the full piece.

I'm not against advertising on the web. I'm against slow, bloated websites loaded down with ads, analytics, beacons & all that other BS that hogs my RAM and slows down load time –hey, I like a zippy browsing experience.

For example, visiting The Verge (one of the heaviest websites I could think of) in Chrome, without all my blocking extensions enabled, uses twice the RAM with a few tabs open.

Meant to post this back when it happened, but still keen to share publicly how awesome it is that #Firefox has taken the step of enabling basic Tracking Protection in Private Browsing Mode. Hoping that other browsers follow suit, but also hoping this will bring some folks back to the Firefox family. More info: https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/43.0.4/tracking-protection/start/?step=1

This is pretty great, or if I was being less generous, about time.
Google has today announced that Offline support for Google Maps on Android which was previewed at Google I/O back in May, including Navigation and search will begin rolling out to Android today. Once rolled out, the latest update will allow users to download a map for offline use the size of a city, county or country simply by searching for[Read More...]

Nexus 5 / 5X  -

Is anyone having performance issues with the 5X? I'm not really getting anything like the butteriness described in "first impressions" reviews. Particularly the responsiveness on the sides of the virtual keyboard seems to be pretty bad. Also (and this may have more to do with the app, but never happened on my old Nexus 5) Firefox for Android first froze and then completely crashed (ie the phone switched off without any input) my 5X. :-(

Got my Nexus 5X yesterday - but now stuck with no way to charge it. :-( What should I buy?

Backstory: Currently living in Germany until Feb, but (though I love it) the old Nexus 5 had been dropped and the battery life was absolutely shocking so didn't want to wait til back in Australia to upgrade. They're not selling the new Nexus' in Germany yet, so I got someone to buy in the UK at CarPhone Warehouse (with currency conversion, worked out at AU$800 for the 32GB carbon) and bring it here. It only came with a UK wall plug (obviously).

Introduction
I'm a passionate social change campaigner, graphic designer and photographer living in the Blue Mountains and currently studying Design in Visual Communication at the University of Technology, Sydney. I've been a professional campaigner for over six years as well as running my own photography and graphic design business and consulting to progressive organisations as a professional facilitator, change strategist and expert in community organising, mass mobilisation, corporate and finance campaigning and political strategy.

Up until the beginning of 2014, I was leading financial and mobilisation strategies for Greenpeace Australia Pacific’s coal and Great Barrier Reef campaign. I am an active member of the board of Solar Citizens / 100% Renewable Community Campaign, Climate Action Blue Mountains and a founding director of the Blue Mountains Renewable Energy Co-op. I grew up on a bush property on the outskirts of Sydney and now live in Leura in the World Heritage Blue Mountains.

Incredible view, but the food is just 'okay' and the coffee is also average.

Great B&B in a very central location on Islay. Very hospitable hosts and clean, comfortable rooms.

Bad for vegetarians. There was only one vegetarian main dish and it was very mediocre given the price and quality of the restaurant - a fairly bland spaghetti. The waitress said the chef would not do any variation or anything off menu. We ended up ordering one of the spaghetti and all the vegetarian sides. The sides were small and while the salad was good, the kimchi cabbage and potato (French fries) were nothing special. The service was also very slow, despite the fact the place was far from full, so we gave up before ordering dessert. The view is really great, but we were sat in the middle away from all the windows. I can't speak for the quality of the fish and other meat dishes of course, but these days it's pretty poor to not have at least one or two good vego options at a restaurant of this calibre.

Incredible cheese plate, done just right. The olive oil and balsamic tasting before our food was delightful. Great domestic wine choice. Excellent service and a lovely atmosphere.

Truly awful. My guacamole & pomegranate entrée was really quite nice, but everything else was a disappointment... at best. The bread was stale and inedible. My main (a quinoa salad) literally had ROTTING artichoke in it. You could smell it across the table. After letting the waitress know, all we got was a cursory "sorry". Thank god they had an (overpriced) dram of Oban whisky.
