Here's an interesting read on the total number of marine species int he world and our ability to identify them all to the species level. The authors, over 100 in total, conclude that, "If the current trend continues, most species will be discovered this century." I'm not sure that we can know the total number of species that we have yet to identify (know what we don't know) well enough to make that prediction. Still, they make a sound statistical argument to get to this conclusion and I find the problem interesting.

Never too old for a bicycle for Christmas. We picked this Huffy up for my wife's mom and, at 60+ years old, she still squealed with joy on Christmas morning. It's an overused phrase but... priceless.

For those of you that can't attend the AGU Fall Meeting in person, there are some virtual attendance options available. I've been following discussions in education, climate change, technology and programming, observing systems... well, the list goes on. Check it out yourself and enjoy! #geek #AGUFallMeeting A big thank you to AGU for recognizing that tight travel budgets are limiting the attendance of some of the federal scientists and making an honest effort to include us.

Well, if the main house doesn't work out, we can always move into the playhouse. #backyardproject

i like how you can just push your garbage out the top window and via the handy shoot it can just come tumbling down into your front lawn in time for garbage day

This was a "why didn't we think of this already" moment for me. Twitter alert when a pod of whales is in range for sightseers, when sharks are near a beach, when my child's car isn't at theater where it was supposed to be. Big Brotherish but used right, could be valuable tool.

Scientists have attached transmitters to the sharks, among them tiger sharks and great whites, according to Sky News. When a tagged shark is detected within one kilometre of a beach, a computer automatically posts the shark's species, size, and approximate location on a Twitter account for Surf Life Saving Western Australia (SLSWA), a community beach safety organisation.

Christmas in Miami, had a great night downtown - but be warned, this town runs to Latin beat year round. No "White Christmas" being sung by this tree.

We're staying home with family and friends.

When stores like Wal-Mart move their Black Friday sales to Thanksgiving Day, they truly have forgotten the purpose of the holiday--and cynically ask their employees to leave their loved ones, too.

Stay with your families on Thursday, friends. Cook and eat together. Watch a football game or a family movie. Call your relatives. Don't waste your precious day off standing in lines or fighting crowds in malls.

We've reserved rooms in advance and stayed at this hotel twice in the last year. Both stays were fantastic, exactly what we expected - a small, clean, modern hotel with an excellent breakfast and nice pool and exercise facilities. It is located directly in front of a mall with several dining options, a movie theater, and a Target. Very convenient. We'll be staying here again.
