Things I've been thinking about lately:
1: Slack is like email now except more annoying because it's constant and there's no thought put towards sending a message. At least with email there is a thin veneer of decorum and forethought when composing a message.
2: Dependencies that shuffle away functionality into the realm of "magic" are probably inherently bad when there is the possibility of onboarding new folks onto projects.
3: college students who only have classwork to show are in for a rude awakening and will quickly learn that the only jobs that hire devs that don't show some passion for what they do are the jobs that no one that knows better wants to do.

Ok going to sleep.

2. Where do you draw the line re: magic? Is Rx magic?

3. That's true, and it sucks. I think it's a form of hiring bias against students who don't have that kind of free time. At the college career fairs we went to this week, I met people with kids, people working jobs during school, and master's students with full-time experience who seemed to be crossing their fingers for any job, like their interests had nothing to do with it. I'd ask, "What do you want to work on?" They'd say, "I've done a lot of XYZ." I see it as a sad reality that we might be able to solve in our hiring process, but that most companies won't bother to.

I started my day angry that Allo has weird sms comparability and ended with the sobering conclusion that it's the only solution that keeps it interoperable with iOS.

Can't send SMS on iOS, so you're forced to rely on an external sms client to handle all that. It's gross, but what other option is there?

I'm still a bit unsure about what it's primary function is, if it isn't a replacement sms app and isn't a replacement/evolution of hangouts? Or, is it meant to be that?

If you're a fan of phone number based messaging apps, want a fast and super reliable messaging service that works across Android, iOS, and anything that supports SMS, or want to see what this whole 'Google Assistant' thing is about, I'd give Google Allo a look.

Download it for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.fireball

+Ian Lake The thing is... neither work, lol. A friend with Allo sent me a message and I received it as a plain SMS with his phone number as the sender. When I tried to respond to him from Facebook Messenger, messenger tried to send the SMS, but it instantly disappeared. So this whole process is buggy as hell...

Google seems to be marketing their upcoming event and the Pixel like no other

In the past, Nexus phones received a random blog post or a private press invite, that's it. Google seems to be going all in with the Pixel this time around and that's just awesome.

They're advertising this event all over the place from TV advertisements to web ads to huge billboards. Here's a Pixel / October 4th event advertisement photo from New York City.

I'm excited.

Excellent drinks, and good beer selection and some pretty outstanding food (the clams are amazing), but it's kind of ruined by the seating situation. It's fend for yourself here, kind of like a culinary Thunderdome: two men enter, one man eats. It's a but ridiculous and I think it may be a social experiment on how humans react to predatory situations. Lots of stares and vulture hovering to get the next seat. It's uncomfortable and definitely favors the aggresive. Maybe one day they'll actually get a normal seating queue, because it's kind of a terrible experience during normal eating hours. Still, it was great food and drinks.

First off the feel of the place when you walk in is very nice. A cool little courtyard seating area and outdoor bar. Staff when I went was top notch. Our waiter was fun, helpful, and patient. He suggested some great drinks and explained what a Tagine was... So I got one. The lamb Tagine was delicious! Well cooked and tasty. It also comes in a fun earthenware dish.

Some great sandwiches! The meatball is delicious and very messy, so be prepared for that. They also have tasty sides, like their potato salad. That said the sandwiches are pretty big even for a small 6" that it's hard to eat a side with it. Definitely enough for two meals.

Good wash. Like most (all?) of these types of car washes, they rarely ever get you car really "clean." More like they just rinse off the top layer of grime. That said, they have detailing services also. The people here were pleasant though, even though it was about 95° outside.
