World Boardgaming Championships wrapup:

Won in the Ticket To Ride quarterfinals, lost in the semis.  The game was the 1910 variant of the American map.  I think my strategy - short lines, taking a lot of tickets - was generally right for this variant,  but while it worked in the quarters it failed in the semis. Quantum fluctuations...

A very good year overall.  I made it to quarter-finals in every tournament I entered except Vegas Showdown, where I started doing heats too late to get the required number of wins.  Made semifinals in Ticket To Ride, Lost Cities, Race for the Galaxy, and Dominion.  Made finals in Power Grid, and brought home a plaque.

Good year for Cathy, too.  She made it into quarters in Ticket to Ride and Puerto Rico, and to semifinals in Race for the Galaxy and Empire Builder.

It look us five years, but we're championship contenders now.  I don't mean to say nobody took us seriously before, because gamers get pretty good at sizing up the competition at a glance and underestimating us would have been stupid of them.  But there's a difference between being almost good enough and actually good enough.  We've crossed that line.  Next year should be interesting.

I was hoping for Dominion but that's still a pretty good show and reminds me I still have to pick up Puerto Rico.

'Boargaming' gives me a completely different mental image. :-)

If I hadn't been house shopping I'd have been there for some of it :\
