It's almost a reflex when I see "> /tmp/anything" then "< /tmp/anything" on the next line is, why not a pipe?  But that could get tricky, I guess.  And the other thing that springs to mind is, what to do if /tmp is not good in that context, preferring to reference $TMP where practical.
