I'm putting my #iraq #journal on Amazon's Kindle Publishing site very soon, hopefully by the end of this week. I found it in a box a few months ago, believing that I had lost it eight or so years ago, and was beaten into submission by friends and family to make it available. Hopefully anyone who decides to read it will get something out of it...

Here is what I am thinking of using as the blurb, will most likely change by the time I get it published (feedback appreciated):

This journal tells the first-hand story of one Recon Marine’s experience with the Marine Corp’s 1st Recon Battalion, Alpha Company during the War in Iraq. If you have read the book Generation Kill by Evan Wright, or watched the HBO mini-series by the same name, you are familiar with Bravo Company; now you can experience the Iraq War from Alpha Company’s perspective, according to CPL Eric Patch.

The journal has been kept true to its original recording with exception for the alteration of names to protect privacy.

Excerpts:

Lightning Lightning Lightning! Incoming Scuds! Gas Gas Gas! MOPP 4! Thank God they landed away from everyone. We could hear impacts in the distance. No chem or bio detected. I just sat in my hole and thought “not much I can do, I hope it doesn't kill me”. Weird feeling. We are in MOPP 2 for the duration now. I hate MOPP gear. I just got the word we are crossing the breech into Iraq at 0300 Zulu tomorrow morning. Safwan hill was taken out earlier today. . . .  The air war has also begun. I'm surprisingly very calm. . . . Wow there are explosions galore in the background; I would hate to be on their side right now. 11.5 hours until we cross.

For the most part the people here are very cooperative and easy to manipulate. They have been abused by their own military for so long. They love us, we are nice and polite and we do not steal their money when we search them. But we are vigilant and stern. One mistake and they learn how serious we are, as a couple of unfortunate ones have found out. We are their best friend or their worst enemy and either way is just fine with us.

The forgery aspect of this reminds me of the movie F for Fake by Orson Welles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F_for_Fake A great movie in my opinion.

I don't think I would fare well if I were still in today. I would probably be in the brig. For much of "how things are" today...
My opinion: What a Blue Falcon!

Lower pay and slimmed-down benefits will make Marines more disciplined and less wasteful, according to the Corps' top enlisted Marine.

I created a photo album that corresponds to my journal http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JFZ8EK4

The captions can be used to reference the corresponding journal entry.

In my opinion nobody hates war more than the soldiers fighting it. How many wars do you think there would be if the politicians' families were fighting in them. I'd bet far fewer, and not over things such as political and economical interests. When I was in Iraq I didn't want to be shot at anymore, I didn't want to shoot at anyone anymore. I continued my mission until completion, but I just wanted to come home.
