Initially I had great luck with +GoPro but after two different models failed on me and it took them ~9 months to issue firmware updates, I bought and fell in love with the +CONTOUR brand. I was so bummed that they went under, but it turns out they're back! Much more bang for your buck than the GoPro, and you can count on it working.

+Eric Kaufman good to know about GoPro batteries. I was more referring to cost of the other cameras being high rather than GoPro being cheap.

For any other sailors out there with GPX files from their GPS receivers, maybe you'll find some use in this.

Nice place. Definitely my preferred hotel in Manhattan. It was (relatively speaking) inexpensive, the room was nice, the staff pleasant, and the location unbeatable. A five minute walk puts you into Times Square, there are places to eat and grab food nearby, and there's a dry cleaner with same day service a couple doors down.

What this place has for the American traveler is a library upstairs with free wifi and an air conditioner. It's a library so you need to be quiet, but if you want a place to grab a chair, knock out some emails or other computer work, and not melt in the heat, this is a good place. The library is on the second floor. A small staircase leads up to it.

Randy at Yacht Docktor has been fixing boats on Shelter Island since the mid 1980's. I found him by accident when someone hit the back of our Hans Christian sailboat, shattering our teak rails, stern pulpit, and lattice board. Randy did a terrific job and I had occasion to visit again just today to pick up some random pieces of teak to make shims for our new self steering wind vane. Yacht Docktor should be one of your go-to locations for marine carpentry in San Diego. You can find cheaper solutions via independent carpenters with lower overhead, and maybe that's what you're looking for. But if you want decades of experience, reliability, and quality, check out Yacht Docktor.

Matt is great, and his work is spot on. There's a lot of cheaper options out there, and if all you need is some dude with a welder than that might work for you. But if you need high quality metal fabrication done, it would be hard to find someone better. I have a Hans Christian sailboat, and decided to get a new stem fitting made. I dropped off my old ones, and about two weeks later Matt gave me my brand new ones that matched the old bolt patterns perfectly. The total cost was $600 for parts and labor. Cheap price to pay to keep my mast from falling off. I uploaded some pictures; you can take a look at the quality yourself. If you want cheap, find some dude on craigslist. If you want quality at a good price, call Matt.

Much of my coffee shop experiences are US-based, so it might be unfair to put Mexican coffee shops in the same category as there are obvious cultural differences. This is a pretty safe bet for a coffee shop as far as quality of beverage, friendliness of staff, and speed of the Internet is concerned. There are only a few tables inside and they're frequently staked out early by folks who just sit there all day doing their day-jobs on laptops. The notion of "stay a bit, do your thing, and get moving" doesn't really exist. There is a cafe on the malecon that looks out on the beach over by the rental car shops that I prefer.

I've hauled out and work done at Driscoll, Khoeler, and Shelter Island Boat Yard. I've worked as a charter captain in America's cup harbor, own/operate/liveaboard a Hans Christian, and work as a skipper for a sport fisher so factor that in regarding my opinion. Additionally I've lived in San Diego for over twenty years, and am over on the Shelter Island peninsula almost every other day. Without a doubt, Shelter Island Boat Yard is the best place that I know of to haul your boat and get work done. There are some smaller yards that I haven't worked with yet, but putting Khoeler on the bottom of the list (walk around town asking people their opinion to figure that one out for yourself) you then get up to Driscoll which although not bad simply doesn't come close to the professionalism, care, and service of Shelter Island Boat Yard. Wayne and Scott (the foremen) are honest, helpful, and not going to rip you off. The yard works by outsourcing everything except bottom paint and the haul/block/launch itself out to "tenants", which are the businesses that are clustered around the yard. If you want a quote for topside paint, you work with the two painter tenants in the yard. If you want diesel work, you talk to Pac West (the engine folks), etc. The foremen can point you in the right directions and help you with any questions. It's a boat yard, not an upscale French bistro, so it's inherently a little rough around the edges. But in the maritime world it's rare to see professionalism and customer service, so Shelter Island Boat Yard is hard to beat. Unless you have some very specific reason, go there for your haulout needs.

Loaded to the gills with charts and maritime books. They have a huge used selection upstairs as well. Gifts, cards, jewelry, etc. Really a super valuable store for any mariner.
