Tidal Basin

This is yet another different image of the Tidal Basin in the early morning hours, with a just a hint of the cherry blossoms off to the side. It’s amazing how the distant city seems to be alive even at the early morning hour when this image was captured. Of course it only gets busier, and to deal with all the traffic and people on a regular day to day basis would be a nightmare!

Sunrise at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (The Prequel)

I set up early at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial the morning I took the photo I shared a couple of weeks ago. Actually, it was dark upon arrival.

That allowed me to get photos of the memorial in several stages as the sun started to rise, such as this one. It was taken four minutes prior to the earlier photo, illustrating how quickly the sun rises, and how fast the colors start changing.

Washington Monument-Take Two

This is another view of the Washington Monument, except this time I used the monument to partially obstruct the sun as I shot into the light.

Washington Monument

I’ve been trying to get close to the Washington Monument for years. Back in 2013, they were repairing it from the earthquake. In 2014, they had it closed off when I was there. Last year I caught the flu bug, and the trip to D.C. was scrapped at the last minute.

So when I had the opportunity to get up close and personal to the monument this year, I took it. I took several images from the base. This image is one of those.

Sunrise at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial

The morning after the Tidal Basin photo I shared yesterday, I was at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (commonly referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial). I arrived before sunrise on the cool morning, and captured the progression from dark night to the sun breaking over the horizon. This image, catching the sun through the memorial, was one of my favorites for the entire trip.

In the background you there are a few landmarks that are easily recognizable. The Washington Monument and the Capitol are to the right of the memorial. If you even look close, you may be able to make out the scaffolding about halfway up the Capitol’s dome, as they are currently restoring the dome itself.

To the left of the memorial you can see the silhouette of the clock tower from the old post office. At one point, a few years ago, it had been converted to a shopping plaza. I think there are plans now to turn it into a hotel.

It was a peaceful morning, and the sunrise is one I won’t soon forget.

Tidal Basin

The warm sunlight hits the cherry trees, just after sunrise. Even though it’s early, there’s still a fair amount of people out and about. If you look closely, you can pick out a few, many dressed in pink as the Cherry Blossom Festival was well underway that week.

Tidal Basin

This is another early morning shot from the Tidal Basin, as the sun’s light was slowly making itself known in the distance. This one reminds me of a similar shot I took a couple of years ago at the Tidal Basin, closer to the Jefferson Memorial.

Metro in Motion

Taken from the upper level of the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Station, this image captures a Metro train as it pulls out and heads to the next stop on the line. I’ve always loved the ceiling texture, combined with the vast underground area in the larger Metro stations, and it makes for the perfect backdrop to a train in motion.

Waiting on Sunrise

Heading back to the Tidal Basin for this image, and this one was taken the same morning as the one I shared a couple of days ago. About an hour prior to the sun rising, there were several clouds still in the sky, and a strong breeze. A nice long exposure, combined with the quickly moving clouds, gives the illusion of cloud movement in this pre-dawn image.

Sunrise at the Tidal Basin

An early morning sunrise at the Tidal Basin in Washington D.C., about 5 days after peak bloom was declared. Still plenty of nice cherry blossom blooms on the trees, but many of the limbs were starting to gain small leaves as the pedals were beginning to fall away.

Story
Tagline
IT by day, photographer and Ford Mustang enthusiast by night.
Introduction

I started my journey into the IT industry around 1981 at the age of 11 with not one, but two TI-99/4A’s and a couple of cassette recorders for storage. Interesting enough, not that it mattered as much to me at the time, the TI-99/4A was the first 16-bit personal computer. Powerful for its time, I still managed to push it to its memory limits, programming in BASIC and creating a few programs that suited my needs at the time.

I’m the Information Technology Manager at Davidson Water Inc., a private non-profit water utility that serves parts of four counties in N.C. While my main job is maintaining the IT infrastructure, I tend to wear several hats that have involved involving water modeling, radio telemetry, and other similar items that may pop up from day to day.

I’m also an avid Ford Mustang enthusiast, having kept at least one Mustang in my garage since 1989. The list of Mustangs that have passed through my garage are:

  • 1965 V6 Mustang Coupe
  • 1989 Mustang LX 5.0
  • 2000 V6 Mustang Coupe
  • 2000 V6 Mustang Convertible
  • 2000 Mustang GT Convertible
  • 2004 V6 Mustang Coupe
  • 2006 Mustang GT Convertible
Currently I still have the following:
  • 1989 Mustang LX 5.0
  • 2006 Mustang GT Convertible
My 2006 GT Convertible is primarily a show car, although it still gets driven quite a bit. It has won numerous car show awards, including Best of Show at a large annual event in Burlington, NC, and Best 05-09 at Mustang Week in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Mustang Week, hosted in Myrtle Beach SC, is one of the largest annual Mustang events on the east coast.

I enjoy photography, both traditional photography as well as HDR/Tone Mapped images. I generally shoot in raw (Canon .cr2), and then process the raw files with Lightroom 4. Depending upon what I'm after I may also use Photomatix Pro, Nik, or Corel Paint Shop Pro.

While a lot of my images focus on automotive themes, since I participate in a lot of car shows, there's way more out there to photograph than cars! So you'll find a mix of subjects in my photographs. I'm also a curator for the Four Wheeled Friday Theme and Community.

I have been publishing some photography articles through my blog. There's not much rhyme or reason to the articles. It is just whatever, and whenever, something pops into my mind to write about.
