A public SNS Topic with a trigger event every quarter hour. Can be used to drive AWS Lambda functions, SQS queues, and email. Free service from an old hacker giving back to the hacker community.

I love the idea of having a full power computer in my pocket that can be plugged in to a standard display and use Bluetooth keyboard, mouse.  Plus, it's a smartphone running Android.

I just picked up (contributed towards) a second Ubuntu Edge.  The contribution/price was just lowered, making them more attractive.

You have to contribute to the Indiegogo campaign now to get one. These phone/computers will not be for sale after manufacture.
The Ubuntu Edge is the next generation of personal computing: smartphone and desktop PC in one state-of-the-art device.

I guess this explains why my computer (Google Hangouts enabled) started ringing recently when people call my cell phone (Google Voice enabled).

It seemed a little creepy at first, but I'm getting used to it and the popup alert saved me a couple times when my phone was on silent.

Hangouts, phone calls and Google Voice

Thanks for all of your feedback on last week's Hangouts launch. I wanted to quickly talk about 1) making/receiving phone calls in Gmail, and 2) Google Voice support more generally.

1) Today's version of Hangouts doesn't yet support outbound calls on the web and in the Chrome extension, but we do support inbound calls to your Google Voice number. We're working hard on supporting both, and outbound/inbound calls will soon be available. In the meantime, you can continue using Google Talk in Gmail.

2) Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.

Divshot is creating impressive tools to help web developers build modern, clean front end code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).  Today Divshot announced that the company has raised $1.1 million in seed funding, and I'm happy to have a part in supporting their work.

The comments on Alestic.com are often better than the articles.  josh.monet's comment on my most recent post forced me to recalculate how Amazon charges for S3 objects transitioned to Glacier.

It turns out that S3 files transferred to Glacier are more expensive than leaving them in S3 for files that are 13 KB or smaller, and not cost effective for some range above that.

I have updated the article including a new formula for calculating the break-even point for automatic archival of S3 objects to Glacier.

Amazon S3 buckets allow you to specify lifecycle rules that tell AWS to automatically delete or archive any objects in that bucket after a specific number of days.

I wrote this article to demonstrate a simple way to restart the delete or archive countdown using the new aws-cli command line tool.

There are a lot of business ideas that require getting payouts to lots of users.  Stripe just made it a whole lot easier to do this.  Of course, Stripe also makes it easy to get money from people, so go build your marketplace now!

Deep math from Ben Tilly.  Part one in a series on AB testing for web sites.  I got an in-person preview where I acted confused and astonished at appropriate times, thus getting me a "thanks" in the credits section.  Seriously, if you can follow this series, there are some pretty amazing approaches with very cool math and business properties.

I've decided to write several articles on how to get the statistics of A/B testing right while being able to look at ongoing tests as often as you like.  You can find the first, which demonstrates a very rigorous approach, at http://elem.com/~btilly/ab-testing-multiple-looks/part1-rigorous.html.

With luck there will be interesting discussion at http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5112378.

Here's a new article that describes how to set up the appropriate SNS topics and CloudWatch alarms so that Amazon will send you emails when your AWS charges accrue past limits you set.
