According to the most recent estimates, over 700,000 household are headed by someone who is over the age of 65 with unpaid student loan debt.  Congress needs to rethink it's 1996 law which allowed for garnishment of Social Security benefits to pay for student loans.

I just finished writing a review of tech site, Digital Inspiration, a very well-designed and useful web resource, with many helpful How-To Guides for the anxious, non-techs.  What other sites do you use to solve tech-related problems you encounter?

Your pet escapes your backyard during a thunderstorm.  After a frantic search, you learn that it was picked up by your local animal shelter, and you can come retrieve it.  Unfortunately, before you get there, your pet is wrongfully euthanized by the shelter.  Do you have any legal recourse, above and beyond whatever "property value" your beloved companion may have had?

One Texas couple's lawsuit seeks to answer that very question, in what is sure to be ground-breaking legal action.  After suffering this very loss, the couple sued under Texas' "sentimental value" statute, asking for the "emotional value" of their animal companion.  As the article notes, on the subject of pets, statutes like the one in Texas have not been uniformly applied, leading to incongruous results - one could, e.g., receive the sentimental value of a photo of their animal companion, but not the sentimental value of the animal itself.

Now, the Texas Supreme Court will weigh in on the issue.  In the world of animal law, this is cutting edge stuff, and well worth watching.

On a personal note, I know at least 2 individuals who have suffered "wrongful euthanasia" of their animal companions.  While shelters generally do their best with the resources given to them, I cannot help but think this unfortunate loss happens more often than we realize.  I hope this couple receives justice.

Being able to adequately advise nonprofit clients, or effectively work in a nonprofit organization, requires legal professionals to have the latest information and trends in the field.  PLI is one of the leaders of providing excellent quality, budget-considerate seminars and other CLE options, and this seminar on "Advising Nonprofit Organizations 2013" promises to be a "not to be missed" educational event.

Paul,
Thanks for setting up the Amplify community here Google+.  I am not sure this is the right platform for it, but it's a start.  I miss Amplify a lot.

For those of you who have a care for animal rights/welfare, please consider signing this Causes Petition and urge your friends to do so also. Some of you may think that this is not a "world will stop turning" issue, right? We are in a presidential election cycle, with so many issues to think about. Maybe so, but this abuse of animals IS stomach-turning and heart-wrenching. It should be stopped.
