  • University of Texas at Dallas
    Emerging Media and Communications, 2011 - 2013
[UT DALLAS] In the Emerging Media and Communication degree program, students learn to combine critical thinking with creative production to become engaged digital citizens. Located within the school of Arts and Humanities the Emerging Media and Communication degree addresses the importance of understanding the social and cultural implications of an “always on” world. Through a range of disciplines including media studies, communication, psychology, art, history, writing, philosophy, and sociology, students will question the significance and impact of digital media on our major social structures and cultural institutions, working to understand how this affects what it means to be a citizen in the digital world. The degree program fosters the skills necessary for students to understand and succeed in the shifting media landscape. Through working on digital media projects, EMAC majors develop critical, creative, and collaborative skills in web design, digital aesthetics, writing and research, social media, and platform and application development. Students are not only challenged to think about how media and communication function today but are also equipped with the tools to critically understand and create the digital media of tomorrow.

We are regulars here on Sunday. Great place to get breakfast tacos after a lazy or busy Saturday night. Food and service are always mediocre. Service suffers when they get busy but the restaurant is always clean.

We visited this winery through a tour through Ciao Florence. Mateo our driver and tour guide was amazing. We had a very small group about 5 of us and had a very personal tour of the winery. In the tasting room we received some Bruschetta, a vegetable lasagna, and then Wild Boar with Peas. All the food was made by our tour guide and owners of the property. It was excellent. Now to hear about the wine which is probably why you are reading this. We got a thorough explanation of the Chianti Classico designation and why some wines have the Black Rooster sticker. My personal description is that this designation ensures that a large portion of the Sangiovese grape from Chianti region is used and then requires every Chianti to taste relatively the same (Boring). My preference is for wine to have more complex tastes and aromas. We tasted generous amounts of Panzanello's Classico Chianti 2012, Chianti Reserve 2011, Il Manuzio 2010, and Vindea Toscana 2006, and Grappe. My personal preference is the Chianti Reserve and the Il Manuzio which I also bought to bring home to the states. The owner, Andrea Sommaruga greeted us toward the end of the tasting and had the Grappe with us. The Grappe is the best I have tasted in Italy. By the end of the night we had made great friends with both our small tour group and the entire staff at Panzanello. I really felt as though I just visited a long lost friend and share some great wine together. Don't miss this little Farm if you are travelling through Italy. Its Amazing and so is the wine!

Front desk, Breakfast and Bell Staff are extremely nice and very accomodating. I recommend you take a taxi from the airport (50 euro) as with most areas we walked in Rome there is very little parking. Breakfast consists of warm vienna sausages and bacon and funny tasting scrambled eggs. Traditional European breakfast otherwise with yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, cereal, hard meats and cheeses. Coffee, juice, and water (sparkling, flat, and natural ). Our room was 421. The room was relatively clean, a lot of dust and a stain in the corner but the rest was fine. Only issue with our room was that you don't have control over the air conditioning so the room is generally too warm during the winter season forcing you to open your window to allow cool air into the room. While this was fine the busy street below caused you to hear every horn honk and drunk football fan that went by and at the end of January there were many. If you go to bed late this shouldn't be a problem for you. The only other issue with the room was smoke venting into the bathroom from our neighbors. Not the hotel's fault but certainly something for you consider. There are many walking distance restaurants in the area they all provide wonderful service and food. Just be sure you ask for a menu or ask if something is included as your wonderful meal can get to 200 euro quickly.

I think most would describe this place family owned and operated treasure of Stafford, Tx. Bob the owner is always on the floor picking up trays, chatting with his customers, making you feel at home. They serve a rather extensive southern comfort food style menu with a relatively small kitchen. The only wait I have ever experienced is waiting in line to order food. This is a great place and I highly recommend you try it.

We asked the local taxi to take us to Gusta Pizza but he dropped us off at Gusta Osteria instead. This turned out to be a fortunate mistake. Gusta Osteria is a charming little restaurant with maybe 10 tables inside and another 3 or 4 outside on the corner of the road. The food is absolutely amazing. I ordered the Pecorino cheese plate which came with focaccia, arugula (rocket), walnut and a bit of honey. Then I had the gnocchi with Gorgonzola cheese, arugula, and walnut. I finished the meal with 600 grams of Bistecca di Fiorentina which came with a bit of tomato and salad. The Bistecca is a grilled T Bone steak. The flavor was wonderful but the new york strip side of my TBone was a bit chewy at a medium rare cook. I definitely recommend this place as a place for dinner for two.

If you want a countryside retreat just outside the city center, there is no better hotel to choose. The rooms beautifully decorated, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is the perfect hotel for a romantic getaway or to relax after sightseeing. This hotel sits right on the river and you have wonderful views in every direction. This historic hotel was once the flour mill of all of Florence. After a major flood in 1966 caused by the Arno river which killed 31 people and damaged many parts of Florence. The flour mill was destroyed (40%). The owners of the mill couldn't restore the mill so they offered it to the city of Florence and they would keeping working there. In 2000 the building was auctioned up and was sold as a lease only for 99 years. To keep this historic building a part of Florence and prevent anyone from destroying the building and building on top of it. It took the current owners the next 10 years to obtain the right permits, paperwork, and to restore the hotel to its current state. The hotel opened in June of 2010. According to Aldo the hotel ambassador all the works of art in the building are original works and not reproductions.

Since moving back to this side of town we have found that many restuarants in this area have some serious management and customer service issues. Pappadeaux Seafood is definitely one of the exceptions. There is usually a little bit of a wait but its worth it. We usually have very particular orders and they have yet to get our orders wrong. Friendliness of staff extends well past our server as there really is a team service environment. When a server or hostess noticed we were low on water they grabbed a pitcher and filled it not waiting for "our server" or tell "our server". Not many great places to eat service wise in the Sugar Land / Stafford area but this is one of them.
