Bosses on social networking are far more successful. But you have to know the rules.
J T O’Donnell signed onto Twitter in 2009, determined to figure it out. As the owner of a company that offers career coaching, she knew she needed to master social networking. Three weeks went by without much success. O’Donnell, who lives in Hampton, New Hampshire, was posting tweets and seeing some response, but she wasn’t seeing much benefit. Then she had an idea: She’d post career questions and ask experts to weigh in. She called it the Twitt...

The world's only blimp-versus-submarine battle happened in 1943 off Key West. The fight was rough for both sides, but what happened afterward was even worse.

From my BBC column: You might think hiring is the key to success, but this next step is just as important.
Sam Prochazka reviewed dozens of CVs for the manager of customer service position at his company. Or maybe it was hundreds. “I honestly lost count,” Prochazka said.

Cows separated from their mothers at birth will produce less milk. And bosses could learn something from this. http://goo.gl/J8AIev
About an hour after a dairy calf is born, it’ll walk on its own. Those first few steps often turn into leaps and awkward sprints that look as much like joy as anything you’ll ever see. It’s at about that time that farmers take the newborns away from their mums. There are many legitimate reasons for doing so, including the fact that domesticated dairy cows are often horrible at raising their young.

If you ever find yourself headed to a Marlins game, here's a handy guide. Highlights you shouldn't miss:
1. Chunks of fried pork belly that are crisp on the outside but melt in your mouth like a pat of butter.
2. See No. 1.
Maximize your baseball experience with our guide to what to do before a Miami Marlins game, where to eat at the stadium, and things to do nearby after the game.

Imagine the top of Everest, two years of training behind you. Now picture that feeling for your company. Here are five steps to get there. http://goo.gl/5MvFLp
Every couple of days, Gordon Janow receives a phone call or email from someone with plans to hike Mount Everest. When he says it takes two or more years of training to prepare for the trek, Janow, director of programs at the Seattle-based mountaineering school Alpine Ascents, loses most of those prospective mountaineers.

Two years ago Lucas Donat decided he needed to root out the unhappy people from +Tiny Rebellion, his ad agency. What he discovered was a lesson about happiness starting from the top. http://goo.gl/Rxf127
Two years ago Lucas Donat decided he needed to root out the unhappy people from Tiny Rebellion, his ad agency. The negative Neds and Debbie downers simply had to go. They were spoiling the otherwise creative atmosphere in his Santa Monica-based firm, and he called in a consultant to help figure out who needed to be sacked.

Five tips for avoiding wasted time in the office, including this gem: forbid meetings that last more than 90 minutes. http://goo.gl/QjMiQy
When dive instructor Yarden Davis takes a group of tourists to the Naked Lady shipwreck in Hawaii, she has one big priority: time management. The shipwreck, off the island of Kona, sits under 33.5 meters of water. That means divers have, at best, 10 minutes of air to explore the bottom. If Davis manages her time right, and conditions are perfect, she can use that time to show tourists a school of yellowtail snapper, the white-tip shark that freq...

Chance are you work for a company that doesn't value innovation. If so, here's how to come up with innovative ideas anyway. http://goo.gl/wwxN1N
The art of making sake changed very little over a millennium or two. For centuries, Japanese brewers made small batches of the rice liquor in wooden tanks and rarely sold it outside their village. Then, enter modernity.

How to demand your employer allows a balance between work and family. http://goo.gl/gSslNy
There was a time when Merideth Gilmor was traveling so much for work that she’d wake up and forget what hotel she was in. Or worse, what city. Gilmor, then handling public relations for fashion label Cole Haan, spent considerable time in Asia, where the company was expanding four years ago. At the end of one such trip, Gilmor had a stark realisation on the flight back to her home in Connecticut. She was in the job she’d always pictured herself h...
