My pans are 8 years old and look as shiny as the day I bought them. I use parchment paper every time I bake for easy, no scrub cleanup.

While I agree that it is generally cheaper to make food at home rather than buy it prepackaged, this article is overstating it. My town doesn't even have a Whole Foods, and I can pick up a jar of "gourmet" salsa for under $4. The store brand is about $2.50.
