+MR BROWNSTONE They know what's going on, Gibson had to pay a fine(300K), relinquish the woods that were illegal(250K+), and donated 50k to a conservation organization. Plus the millions lost due to downtime. i am certain that Gibson will be filing some action. i have no idea what drew the Madagascar comment. i wouldn't think the CEO would get flippant or disrespectful of Congress, but money-wise, it is probably in their best interest to move operations, but it would be tragic beyond measure to the U.S.

They actually were in clear violation of the Lacey Act, which, BTW, Obama did not enact. My problem is the the Act's language, which is another example of how legalese ends up making something so convoluted that we cannot hardly interpret it, let alone import raw materials of this sort, without them being worked or "value added" first....ridiculous, and that puts a Gibson employee out of a job.

My other big problem with this is, once again, our amped up, over militarized police force and its tactics. A lot of the people that work at Gibson have been there for ages...Grandmothers and Grandfathers work there, was an armed siege reallllly necessary? Methinks not.

AFAiK, Brazilian Rosewood and Ebony and Mahogany are the only ones that are absolute NO-NO's, unless it is old stock(must be proven), or they cut some of it from old stumps now, but that's low quality grain, and there are much better woods than stump wood. To my understanding, African & Asian Mahogany, Rosewood and Ebony are all acceptable woods for this. My reference for this is a documentary on here about Martin Guitars, and the issue of legality, and availability of woods are discussed, and they speak of what is still ok...or was when that was filmed...need to check out the date...In any event, the only woods that i thought were absolutely banned were all Brazilian, perhaps it has expanded to include the other regions, but sure didn't think they had.

i have a '77 Ovation, Brazilian Mahogany neck, Alder top, Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and an Ivory saddle and nut. All of that was legally used in 77. Yes, i think Ivory harvesting was banned pre-77, but stored amounts were allowed, as well as re-purposed amounts from old pianos, pool balls, et.al. Anyway, i have no plans to take it abroad with me, and was never compelled to previously. If i were touring, i think i'd not be taking anything of real value.

The problem with Tropical Hardwoods is they take forever to grow. The reason they are so favored, is because, near the Equator, trees do not physically turn toward the Sun as it moves with the seasons. This causes a twisting effect in the North and South Hemispheres. Since the Sun stays fairly static as far as its high path across the Tropical sky, the trees turn very minimally if any, which yields the straightest grained wood on Earth. Pity there will be no more.
