I believe it is not that patients don't want to access their medical records it is just too complicated to get there.   And for many patients there are multiple places they need to go.

This sounds like a simple communication tool that was useful to the patient and the providers.  Something that was simple for patients to get registered to, and engage their caregivers with.  I believe that is the type of technology solution that many patients and providers are looking for.

EHRs and Portals are excellent data repositories.  They will never be effective communication tools.    Secure Medical Email is the best answer for provider/patient communication.

Patients really depend on their healthcare providers to watch over their medical data.   Increasing the options doctors have and are willing to use to communicate with their patients more often, will improve medical care knowledge.   When the healthcare provider prepares the information in a form the patient is comfortable absorbing then effective knowledge transfer will be achieved.

This is what we know.  The solution that works for this segment of the patient population must engage the patients trusted caregiver.   When you bring in that support giver, like an adult child or sibling, into the process you have a much greater chance of achieving productive provider-patient communication.
