New Google+ for Android: polish and performance

We continue to work toward a simpler, more beautiful Google, and today we're accelerating these efforts with a new Google+ app for Android phones. The update includes lots of highly-requested features—like the ability to start a hangout on the go, and to edit posts inline—as well as a stream that celebrates the rich content shared across Google+. In all cases we're building for a mobile future, and we're excited about what's ahead.

Start a hangout from anywhere, and ring the folks that matter most

With Hangouts we want to help people connect face-to-face-to-face—at any time, from anywhere. Of course, there's really only one device that's always by your side—your phone—so we've invested in mobile hangouts since early on. Today we're adding another important feature to the mix: the ability to start a hangout directly from your mobile device.

To get started, tap “Hangout” in the (new) navigation ribbon, add some friends and tap “Start.” We'll ring their phones (if you want), and if someone misses the hangout, they can ring you back with a single tap.

Share your favorites, and feel awesome afterward

When you share with your circles, we owe you an experience that's both intimate and immersive. Your time and your relationships are precious, after all, so your posts should make you feel proud. Today's new Android app takes this to heart, with full-screen media in the stream, conversations that fade into view and instantly-touchable actions like +1.

Do more, in less time

We think you’ll find today’s app nicer to look at, but we’re also making it easier to use. Improvements include:

A navigation ribbon that slides in and out, providing quick access to just about everything.

The ability to download photos directly from Google+, and turn them into wallpaper.

The chance to edit posts inline, in case you make any mistakes while on the go.

The update is available now from Google Play (version 2.6), so we invite you to download Google+, and let us know what you think!

Not liking the smushed pictures but I see where they were going....I'll get used to it

still no tablette optimised version => still not as good as it should be!

And I'm not sure to like the way picture/video are displayed with the text over them... not easy to read the post!

Is Google+ only a photograph social network ?

I dislike it a lot. Posts are reduced to one line of text. Reshared content isn't displayed. A link's image takes the full stage, without any indication that there is a link attached, let alone showing the link's title. Comments are not displayed in the main feed.

It's horrible, and for people who put time in writing long form posts on Google+, it means that a large percentage of their audience will probably no longer read their posts.

What happened to in app notifications?

Its nice, a little bit slow but the layout works

I'm ambivalent towards the new G+. I hope they strike a better balance between text and photos/images in future updates. In my opinion the update skews way too heavily towards photos/images. But I do like how hangouts have been brought forward to the main menu instead of being buried in the Messenger app.

I love it. I do agree with some of the posts above but it looks a lot more polished and not just something thrown out there as strictly functional.

Just noticed that you can start hangouts now. That's worth all the other changes combined! :D

About time seeing as it came out on iOS a while ago. Good stuff though.

Just missing the dots that show that there is more than one picture in the post. Just clear cache and data from app and it will get rid of the blurry pictures, especially on tablet.

Vast improvement! Love it

Love it!!! I'm all about Android but play on my old 3gs from time to time and read the awesome Google+ app on it and when I got familiar with it I was a little upset that iOS had that (this) awesome app we we were left with "vintage" google+ lol... happy now though BC android (g nexus) is my everyday phone. Thanks for coming through :)

Love it....it shows creativity on the side of the developers....

Get some good features, but throw out the view.

I really like the outlook, but the pictures with a lower resolution getting stretched is not the most pleasant thing ever. Much better than the old one tho. Good job BigG.

I love it! Sets them apart from the other boring social networks!

How do I revert back to the old G+ after updating just now? Looks like shit, complete garbage.

I don't have a previous apk file, I downloaded it from Market and you don't keep the install file.

Is it perfect? No. But it's definitely more polished than it's predecessor. And much more visually appealing than the Facebook app.

Just downloaded the update and checking out, must say I'm a little impressed

Just found that notifications are at the bottom of the side quick menu...wish they were more obvious.

At first glance I was not feeling the update but after using it for a few minutes.. I like it! It felt way to busy at first, but it's just as simple as before, yet more flashy... I see what you did there google. Good job.

Looks beautiful. Certain pics look stretched/pi elated but moat look awesome. Nice job Google. Looks high class. Much better than Facebook. They'll probably copy this now lol

How can somebody like the whole design is so different from beautiful minimalist Google designs... it looks like some cheap copy of instagram UI.

Needs a button to take ya back to stream from within a link instead of multi back button pressing if that makes sense

Does anyone knows utility/program/extension that would sit in my windows notification tray and notify me if someone is trying to contact me through Google+ Hangout (even if my Chrome browser is closed)? Something similar to Gmail notifier.

It's the best layout of all the social apps.

Wonderful design! Just don't like the small grey strip on top of everybody.

Love it so much...but the stretched picture could improve a bit
