About 415 million people around the world— which translates to about 1 of 11 people — have diabetes, according to the new International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas released at the World Diabetes Congress in Vancouver, Canada.

Data from the Diabetes Atlas also indicate that the United States has the highest prevalence of diabetes among developed nations, with 11% of the population aged 20 to 79 years having the disease.

Moreover, almost 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, which accounts for approximately two thirds of the number of cases of all the other 37 nations in the developed nation league combined (46 million). #diabetes #WDC2015 http://ow.ly/VLjzw

Could a new “smart” insulin patch be a game-changer for patients with diabetes?

Researchers who studied the novel technology seem to think so, as the patch offers benefits that other current diabetes management strategies do not. For instance, the researchers noted that their smart insulin patch offers the unique benefit of potentially working more quickly than other closed loop systems, thereby preventing problems with hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. #insulin #hypoglycemia #diabetes

Though Ramadan represents a period of reflection and religious devotion for those who follow Islam, it can also present a significant medical challenge for endocrinologists and their Muslim patients with diabetes.

Ramadan is a lunar-based month that can last from 29 to 30 days during which many Muslims fast. Because the lunar calendar is about 11 days shorter than the solar calendar, Islamic holidays move each year. In 2015, Ramadan is expected to begin at sundown on June 18 in the United States, with dates varying throughout the world. Depending on the geographical location and season, the duration of the daily fast may range from a few hours to more than 20 hours.

However, although the timing may range from city to city and country to country, the challenges that patients with diabetes face remain the same, according to experts. #diabetes #Ramadan

BOSTON — The role of the endocrinologist in diabetes management has changed dramatically over the past 50 years, and will continue to change rapidly in the years to come.

A special symposium held at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 75th Scientific Sessions highlighted how much physicians and researchers have learned about diabetes management and how the lives of patients have changed during the past 5 decades. #diabetes #2015ADA #endocrinology

The 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guidelines for determining statin eligibility have been found to be more accurate and efficient in identifying increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and presence of subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD), as compared with the 2004 guidelines. #heartdisease #statins #cardiovascular
