Wow...I've really been neglecting Google+ Sparks. I hadn't checked the ones I created when I first set up my account, until an hour ago, when I accidentally clicked on the ecology one. The first result was a blog that seems as if it was directly tailored to my interests (ecology, ecological informatics, and open source), which is pretty amazing.

It also pointed me to the following gem.

Conclusion: I'm going to start actually using sparks.
Q: Do I have to kill the snake? A: University guidelines state that you have to “defeat” the snake. There are many ways to accomplish this. Lots...

Snake fighting! Seriously? American Universities are so lame compared to the rest of the world. At St Andrews, 4th years have to break into one of the oldest buildings, navigate the catacombs and retrieve the correct ancient scroll from an underground vault. Then they have to fight an angry highland cow to get out.

This is absolutely disgusting. Saying that "elevat[ing] nature above humans...is against the bible and bill of rights" is both nearly impossible to defend and completely self-destructive. Even ignoring the fact that humans are part of nature, we clearly cannot survive without a functioning ecosystem around us. I could continue on this rant, but I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir anyway. Suffice to say that it really scares me that people are blindly asserting ideas like this.
