> The VR metaphor reminds us that all of our institutions are fundamentally projections. We give these projections (and the virtual worlds they create), power by participating, and most importantly, by indulging them as legitimate. All cultures and civilizations are relative. So much so, we might well remind ourselves through this VR metaphor if we are to remain steadfast in seeking whatever can be found and developed far beyond their assumed thresholds and limits of vision. Perhaps the cultural apocalypse (‘apocalypse’ as in ‘unveiling’) we require in order to free ourselves from the bondage of our current ecocidal project can also be found with this metaphor. Maybe VR will give us the psychic breathing room necessary to re-examine what are fundamentally our creations—currency for instance. Breathing room for a new vision and a new culture to develop that doesn’t so breezily permit catastrophe upon catastrophe. Indeed, culture wouldn’t be a problem if our current attempts at culture didn’t create so many problems (i.e. externalities and classism).

America's Population Density / Some States Hold Others Hostage / Senate Is Broken - Undemocratic!

Bold claims, right? : )  It is all actually pretty fascinating. Equal Population Mapper allows you to pick on comparative City or State, and pick anywhere else on the map to see how much area the same number of people live in.

The little orange dot in the graph top left is New York City, the mass of red is the "equal population" area.

Crazy, right?

No wonder New Yorkers feel the way they do.

The top right makes things a bit more clear, comparing Texas' population, and the equal area (basically the whole of western United States except the coast!). Should all those people get to decide gay marriage is ok and force it on Texans who are passionately against it?

Bottom left, comparing populations on the two coasts (blue states!! : )) and equal areas (fly-over red states! : )).

Finally, bottom right, the population of the lovely state of Wyoming, all of it, compared to a random geo on the east-coast. You can't see the equal population area, it is so small, but I left the mouse there to guide you!

Think about the implications of this in terms of politics (and many other things). Why are all these candidates obsessing about Iowa, and why do they get to choose that the rest of the country will have Trump foisted on us rather than Jeb Bush? If we ask everyone, it is likely Jeb.

If it is one person one vote, the essence of democracy, how is the (massively dysfunctional) US Senate a good idea? Tiny states, see maps below, get two Senators, the same as massive population states. How is this democracy?

One more... If massive population centers decide to accept President Obama's policies on medicaid for the poorest of the poor, why should tiny red state governers have the power to keep their poor without healthcare (while cutting taxes on the rich)?

If we switch to one person one vote, how different would America look? How much deeper would the influence of Texas, Florida, Ohio, New York and California be?

A better country?

I dont think it's so much all the stress but just the passing of the years. We do our best to fool ourselves into believing that we do not age.
