Remagen Airstrip at Fort Stewart  was declared “open for business” on Thursday November 14 2013 with the arrival and departure of a Georgia Air Guard C-130 Hercules from the 165th Airlift Wing - Savannah International Airport . The airstrip has been around and utilized frequently since its construction in the early 1960’s.  During the 1990’s the airstrip fell out of use and was tagged to be abandoned.  With the advent of the  Global War on Terror in the early 2000’s, the Air Force suddenly needed to relearn the art of landing cargo planes on rough, unpaved airstrips in forward areas like Iraq and Afghanistan . Remagen was seen as a diamond in the rough and an effort was undertaken to rehabilitate and facilitate its use.  EMC Engineering was contacted to provide geotechnical evaluations of the runway surface and later to provide surveying, design and technical advisement to support the joint service team tasked to reconstruct the runway surface for tactical use. EMC was proud to be part of the Army/Air Force team that rehabilitated Remagen from a mere afterthought to the premiere assault landing field on the East Coast.  To quote one of the pilots flying the Hercules that made the landing and takeoff ….”This runway was smoother and graded tighter than the runway we took off from at the Savannah International Airport.  I am excited we now have a rough assault field of this quality in our back yard, instead of having to fly 2 hours to Fort Bragg to train on theirs.”  Dignitaries there to witness this event included the CDR 165TH Airlift Wing, Fort Stewart Garrison Commander, and CDR Combat Readiness Training Center – Ga Air Guard, Savannah,GA.

This project also has a personal side for one EMC employee. Roger Houston’s father, Tommy Houston, served as Post Engineer and training infrastructure consultant for Ft Stewart for over 50 years.  Right after his death in early 2013, EMC was selected to provide design services for the runway.  For Roger, this allowed him to help complete and fulfill a lasting legacy his father started.

EMC will continue to provide design and consulting services to the Army and Air Force as they look to rework Remagen Airfield once again to accommodate, not only the venerable C-130 Hercules, but the state of the art C-17 Globemaster III.

EMC is currently providing surveying and civil engineering services for the construction of the Shooting Sports Education Center on the Georgia Southern University campus. The Center will provide competitive shooting and education for shooters, hunters and archers in the skills and knowledge necessary to be a responsible shooting sports participant. The complex, which will include indoor shooting, indoor archery and outdoor archery ranges, will not only be utilized by the University but will also be open to the public. Once completed, this facility will be the only one of its kind East of the Mississippi River.
