The Alentejo is a region of Portugal. It goes from the Tejo river all the way south to the Algarve. It's a big portion of the country, but it's pretty wild and scarcely populated. What I like about the Alentejo is its timelessness and the sense of peace it emanates, which makes it a perfect ...

The mood of the Oeste is a series of blog entries where I share some of the photos I shoot in the regiao Oeste, in central Portugal. When I'm in Portugal I'm based here, and I've been coming to this region many times, both for long and short stays, during the last few years.

Gong xi fa cai! Yesterday, the 19th of February, marked the lunar new year, which is more commonly referred to as the Chinese New Year. I'm planning to take part in some of the celebrations that will be held tomorrow in Lisbon, where the local Chinese community will send off the year of the ...

Last Friday I was in Alcoutim, a nice little town in south eastern Portugal, to give a talk about the Portuguese Travel Cookbook – a book project I worked on along with my friend Nelson Carvalheiro. That evening someone mentioned to me that the day after there was going to be a cattle fair in a ...

New on the blog
Braga, in the Minho region of northern Portugal, has a long tradition of celebrating Easter. Braga's Dark Easter is a photo essay of mine, which features photos from Easter Week processions and masses held in Braga in 2014 and 2015. It looks at the way pain and grief are expressed among devouts, ...

Devotees lift a semi-naked infant close to the simulacrum of Santa Maria Addolorata during a religious festival in Palazzolo Acreide, in the Siracusa province in South Eastern Sicily. The act of lifting a child towards the simulacrum of a Saint for good fortune and protection from the Saint, is common practice in patron saints' festivals in South Eastern Sicily. Parents usually also offer money to have their children lifted.
