While I may think Mr. Brandt is being a patoot about allowing the bike trail, I also see why he would claim ownership of the abandoned right of way. I would, too. This is going to be a significant case for those wishing to build and use trails of all kinds across the US.

Solar flare! The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 6:34 p.m. EDT on March 12, 2014, and NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, captured an image of it. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

SDO captures images of the sun in many wavelengths of light at the same time, each of which is typically colorized in a different color. Each wavelength shows different aspects of the same event, as seen in these three images of the solar flare.

Check with your state's court rules. I cannot find anything close to what this gent is saying in the FRCP or in the State of Georgia court rules. He could be accurate for the State of Florida for all I know. I'm just not seeing it from where I sit. Just sayin'.

First Moments of a Solar Flare in Different Wavelengths of Light

I share gladly this astonishing image of a recent Solar Flare.

On Feb. 24, 2014, the sun emitted a significant solar flare, peaking at 7:49 p.m. EST. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which keeps a constant watch on the sun, captured images of the event. These SDO images from 7:25 p.m. EST on Feb. 24 show the first moments of this X-class flare in different wavelengths of light -- seen as the bright spot that appears on the left limb of the sun. Hot solar material can be seen hovering above the active region in the sun's atmosphere, the corona.
Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation, appearing as giant flashes of light in the SDO images. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

It has long been a mainstay of prison directors to "throw 'em in the hole" when chronically/violently disruptive prisoners get out of hand. It is a measure of discipline that is understandably greatly feared by most prisoners - it has been known to cost people their sanity and, in some cases, their lives. Many times, the "hole" is the reason that "suicide by cop" is preferable to "going back in" - they know they will wind up back in there and they can't face the thought. It is simply better to die now.

The arguments that have been made that it "saves the taxpayers money" are cruel and heartless to our fellow man. I know, I know - they are criminals and should be punished. I don't argue that point. What I argue is the means to achieve it. Is cruelty the only method by which we can exact our wishes on offenders?

Sure - a penalty for misbehavior should be tough. But you can enforce discipline in other ways. For example - just segregating someone away in a soundproof area where they can see, but not hear or be heard by their peers, nor can their peers see them could be used as punishment. Being kept forcibly on the outside is used in the animal kingdom by many species - either for breeding purposes or to drive maturing youngsters out to find their own way. New members are brought in, tested, approved or thrown out with this method. Fit in or be kept on the periphery - or go find another place to live or blend in.

The use of much smaller groups works much better as well. Some individuals just do not do well in large populations. They will find something to get into and will cause problems. Do not allow that to happen. Why do we have to have gigantic herds of miscreants in the first place? We are asking for chaos in the prisons.

Give them work. Make them raise their own food. Nobody ever appreciates what they eat more than when they raise it themselves. That includes beef, chickens, eggs, goats, vegetables. There's nothing wrong with digging in the dirt. Heck, teach them to harness a team and plow.
