While we were filming from Iceland to New Zealand for “Photographing the World: Landscapes and Post-processing,” the cameras never stopped rolling and Lee and Patrick cut together a wildly entertaining series of 8 behind the scenes episodes.

This time, we visit a glacier ice cave that was so amazing, that we decided to dedicate an entire episode to it. We also discover whether or not Siggy is actually an axe murderer, and did I hear Lee say something about Half Life 3? ;)

Welcome back to our weekly segment of Photographing The World Behind the Scenes where we take you through the process of filming our landscape photography tutorial with Elia Locardi. In last week's video, episode 2, we ran through 4 different lessons in 4 completely different locations around Iceland. This week's location, a glacier ice cave, was so amazing that we decided to dedicate an entire episode to it.

The Road to Mt Cook || New Zealand

With landscape photography, sometimes the road can be just as interesting as the destination. and this particular route on the way to Mt Cook is a beautiful example of this.

While we were filming Photographing The World, we spent nearly an entire month driving around the South Island of New Zealand looking for different places to teach unique lessons about landscape photography. Here, I had a fun idea to incorporate light trails into the scene to help accentuate the awesome curves in the road. The only issue was that there was no traffic at that time of night!

What was the solution? Have Lee and Patrick drive up and down the road as I capture multiple exposures of light trails. ;)

Winters Grasp || Iceland

We live in a beautiful world that’s just waiting to be explored, and for me, Iceland most definitely tops the charts with some of the most extraordinary landscapes on the planet. I know its been a long while since I’ve shared a new image from Iceland but believe me, I’ve been shooting and processing many since my last visit with Fstoppers in December.

Out of 10 days of icy winter exploration, this was one of my favorite locations we filmed while I taught a lesson on manual exposure blending and how to use a solid neutral density filter to create soft tendrils of streaky water. Since it was winter time, we had to use crampons to safely hike in and approach the edge of the cliff but that just added to the uniqueness of the experience. It also meant that there were beautiful patches of snow and ice that mixed perfectly with the composition.

To learn how I shot and post-processed this image from start to finish and see the before and after comparison, you can find all the info about my new educational video by visiting:

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! Today is an extremely exciting day! :D

After 6 months of production both in the field and in the studio, I’m thrilled to finally announce the release of my first video with Fstoppers, Photographing The World: Landcape Photography and Post-processing!

What has been a labor of love has also been one of the most challenging and demanding projects that I’ve ever taken on. The production value is off the charts and I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish here. I'm overjoyed to see it finally be live.

I also want to thank everyone who has been following along with our incredible journey around the world to film this project. Your continued support means more to me than words can express!

The Walled City || Dubrovnik Croatia

In 2011, Dubrovnik was one of my favorite Unesco world heritage cities that I visited while building my travel photography portfolio. Last October—exactly three years to the day since my last visit—I decided to swing by the walled city once again and I was delighted to see that it still holds the same breathtaking color and texture. It was also nice to wander around the streets of Kings Landing with fresh eyes now that I’m such a huge fan of Game of Thrones. ;)

Naomi and I just celebrated our 40th month of being 100% location independent!

What most people don’t know is that it was an incredible struggle for us to get to where we are today. Success has not come easily and before we made the decision to become location independent, we spent a few difficult years trying to cope with an impossible amount of debt and lost nearly everything to the housing crisis. This video and post explains that journey and how those hardships ushered in a transformation that would become the greatest collection of experiences and memories of our entire lives.

I also share my advice on how you can start your own path towards become location independent.

Naomi and I just celebrated our 40th month of being on the road full-time and living a 100% location independent lifestyle. Looking back, it seems like a lifetime ago when we made that crazy decision to sell nearly everything we owned and adopt a life filled with travel photography. In a way, it really was a lifetime ago because we were completely different people back then living very different lives; two people with a dream of what could be, te...

+Elia Locardi +Naomi Locardi   Your story is wonderful, as are you images. I'm really really glad it is (finally) working out for you, it is comforting to see that perseverance and keeping true to one's true values (you have to really know what they are!) pays off in the longer run. Truly inspiring. And I hope it only gets better!
I am curious, though, to understand how you deal with some of the hindrances I face when I travel (which I do a fair bit, but nowhere near you guys ;-)) - I hate living out of a suitcase, especially re-making it when leaving some place.
- It takes me a few days to readjust to the time zones, in addition to recovering from sleeping in airplanes (unless I'm traveling business class, which is rare, only when I manage to get an upgrade...). From what I've read about your travels, not only do you travel far, but you also hop many (>4, 5) time zones each time - and don't stay longer than 7 days in one place, typically. To top all of this, photography routine is typically getting up before sunrise...
You must be walking zombies ;-)! - How do you deal with laundry? Do you wash your clothes in the hotel?
- What is your backup strategy? I am sure you have several external HDs, plus cloud storage. But this requires enough bandwidth... And I presume carrying your HDs around is also not a very safe approach for more permanent backup.
- How do you deal with medical issues (not necessarily illnesses), like regular treatments, dentist, etc...?
It would be nice if you can share your experiences in these aspects...
Thanks and good luck, carry on!

While we were filming from Iceland to New Zealand for “Photographing the World: Landscapes and Post-processing,” the cameras never stopped rolling and Lee and Patrick cut together a wildly entertaining series of 8 behind the scenes episodes.

In this second episode, we film different lessons in four incredible locations, we have the worst Thanksgiving dinner of our lives, and Lee Morris makes a special new Icelandic friend.

If you haven't already heard, Fstoppers has teamed up with Elia Locardi to produce Photographing The World: Landscape Photography and Post-Processing. For the entire 2 months of filming this tutorial we filmed hours of behind the scenes footage every single day and we ended up editing it down to 8, 15 minute episodes.

In this first episode, we all arrive in Iceland to meet the team, Patrick over dresses, and we get absolutely pummeled by hail on our first day of filming at Kirkjufell Mountain.

I’ve had a great time here in Chicago meeting so many wonderful people, teaching a Moments in Time workshop and speaking during the Out of Chicago Photography Conference. And of course, last night’s photo walk was awesome too! A huge thanks to everyone for making Naomi and I feel so welcome in the windy city!

Introduction

I’m a professional travel photographer, writer, public speaker, and educator who spends his life seeking out and capturing some of the most beautiful and inspiring destinations in the world. Location independent since March of 2012, my wife and I live a 100% mobile (global nomadic) lifestyle, perpetually traveling from country to country, continuously circling the globe. Since I began traveling full-time in 2009, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting more than 45 countries while flying well over one million miles.

Throughout this perpetual journey, I enjoy teaching the art of photography on my website www.blamethemonkey.com, while sharing my images and stories across various social media outlets. I also collaborate with many different sponsors, brands, and tourism boards, and lead Photography Tours and Post-processing Workshops worldwide. Feel free to drop me a line anytime and if I happen to be in a town near you, I’m always up for a good conversation and coffee.

Follow me on Instagram to keep up on my latest locations and projects. I’m also extremely active on Social Media with daily posts and consistent engagement on Facebook, Twitter, and of course Google+.

You can also view my complete Photography Portfolio.
