Divinity || Florence

Henry Miller once said that, “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”

I feel like as a photographer, this quote has become increasingly more relevant to me the more years I travel the world. Each year, the world becomes a smaller place as global tourism increases exponentially in nearly all of the major travel destinations. And that means that it also becomes more challenge to visually portray these places in a new and unique way.

But saying that, the fact that so many photographers visit this location only motivates me. Since we can all stand here in the same place, I get excited about trying to capture something that has been seen countless times before in a new and interesting way. That’s why when a thunder storm rolled over the city center of Florence, I set up to capture the dazzling display! :)

Would anyone like to join Naomi and I on a Mediterranean Beach Paradise this June?

If so, there are still a few spots remaining for our DJI Drone Photography Workshop on beautiful Minorca Island, June 9th - 11th!

Magnitude || Monument Valley, Utah

With only one evening to shoot in this massive and spectacular landscape, my goal was to capture something a little bit different than usual. And thankfully, the sky cooperated with my idea of combining light trails leading down the long dusty road.

Monument Valley is incredible. It’s a location that I’ve seen so many times in films and having the opportunity to finally experience it in person was well worth the effort of getting there. My only disappointment was having just one single night to enjoy and take in the overwhelming magnitude of this classic American landscape.

If you want to learn my entire landscape photography and post-processing workflow from start to finish, both in the field and in editing, I've created an in-depth video tutorial course: http://bit.ly/landscape-tutorial

Luminosity || Arizona

Traveling and spending the majority of my time abroad for the past series of years, I’ve had conversations with so many people who say that the landscapes in the Western United States are some of the most spectacular in the world.

Being that I’m American and after visiting more than 55 countries, I’m ashamed to say that this was the first time I’ve ever explored this much of my own country. And now, all of those conversations I’ve had with people all over the world are being proven true. The American West is phenomenal.

Full disclosure though, Upper Antelope Canyon is beautiful to see in person but because of that, it’s also incredibly busy as well. With so much going on around me, I was lucky to come away with a shot! :)

Moods of Manhattan || New York

Back in March when we first arrived for a shooting project in New York, it was a warm spring climate of 65 degrees. Then, the next evening when I captured this photo on the Brooklyn side, it was 12 degrees with a severe wind chill! It was so cold that I couldn’t feel my fingers while I was adjusting my 10-stop ND filter. Thankfully it all worked out because the sunset was absolutely incredible, and as a bonus, I also didn’t end up with frost bitten fingers. ;)

I’m excited to share this shot today because it’s part of a series of images I worked to capture in collaboration with Fujifilm using the GFX 50s Mirrorless Medium Format Camera and the brand new 23mm GF Lens, which was announced earlier this morning. And without getting too technical about crop factors and medium format, the 23mm lens effectively provides an 18mm focal length which makes it perfect for wide angle landscape and cityscape photography.

I’m also excited to share this because with the cascade of back-to-back photography projects I’ve had so far this year, along with the fact that these new GFX 50s images have been secret until today, I haven’t had the chance to share any of my new photos this year. That is, until now. :)

The Moments Between || Osaka Castle

Having enjoyed many visits to Japan over the past series of years, one of my all-time favorite places to photograph is Osaka Castle. Each year, I love searching for new compositions and angles that frame the beautiful architecture with the elegant cherry blossoms.

This season, I’m also shooting with the new Fujifilm GFX 50s, which I have to say produces some razor sharp and super detailed images. Hopefully I’ll be able to edit and share the results of some of my latest work very soon!

Until then, it’s time for more Sakura and Sake - though not necessarily in that order. ;)

The Moments Between || West World

Traveling and living abroad for the past series of years, I’ve had conversations with so many people who say that the National Parks in North America are some of the most spectacular in the world. Obviously, being that I’m American, everyone always assumes that I’ve visited them all.

Truth be told, after visiting more than 55 countries, I’m a bit ashamed to say that this is the first time I’ve ever explored this much of my own. And now, all of those conversations I’ve had with people all over the world are being proven true. The American West is absolutely spectacular and I can’t wait to see more!

Though easy to get to, this view of the famous Monument Valley was even more beautiful to see in person than I expected. It’s even bringing up memories of the classic Jon Wayne movies I loved when I was younger.

In this shot you see two cameras. On the right, the Fujifilm GFX 50s shooting a vertical composition in 3:4 aspect. On the left, the Fujifilm X-Pro2 shooting in 3:2 and slightly more zoomed in. Let’s see which one comes out the best! :)

The Moments Between || City Views

Even though we had to cut our visit short to avoid the incoming blizzard, we still managed to have a blast in New York City, while capturing some phenomenal images in the process. And, I have to admit, changing our flights was a wise choice since the latest stats show nearly 8,000 flight cancellations in the region today!

It's also interesting that while I travel around 200,000 miles per year, I rarely have the pleasure of working on projects inside my own country. But this time—along with NYC and Las Vegas—we’ll be visiting and photographing some of the most beautiful national parks in the western United States. Add the fact that I'm using the new Fujifilm GFX 50s Medium Format Camera in the process, and the next two weeks are going to be exciting indeed!

Here you see the new GFX 50s and my Really Right Stuff TFA-01 tripod setup and ready to capture the iconic skyline view from the top of the rock. While stunning, it was also absolutely freezing up there on Sunday night! Shivering so much, it was a long wait for blue hour!

Well then, it looks like March is about to get much more interesting!

Next week, I’ll be starting an exciting new project that will give me the opportunity to shoot with the new Fujfilm GFX 50s in a variety of beautiful and unique destinations.

In the process, I’ll do my best to put together a ‘hands on’ style review, where I’ll share the results of what I capture, as well as the details about how this camera performs both in the field and in post-processing.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment below and I’ll do my best to answer them in the weeks to come.
