We are close to finishing a work space for young people who are interested in running social action projects or their own social enterprises. This could not have happened without the support of @BigLotteryFund which has helped us to take the idea into a reality! Looking forward sharing the photos of the finished room with you and hearing your opinions!

Element Employee Spotlight of the Week

John, 66- Business Improvement Officer

John joined Element Society’s team beginning of this year, and is now actively participating in the business and management side of the charity. As well as supporting Element Society to become more sustainable and organised, John is the creator of one of our upcoming projects called Work Readiness Programme. The Work Readiness Programme will be targeting young people who find themselves in a vicious circle of not having the appropriate skills to attain meaningful employment whilst being denied of any work experience due to not having been employed previously.

After retirement, John was determined to give something back to the society. “So many people in my age are putting all the skills, experience and knowledge they have gained throughout the years on a ‘shelf’ and get comfortable with their slow and simple lives. When I retired I felt that all this knowledge that I have would be lost forever if I didn’t share them with other people who desperately need it.”

After John’s initial meeting with our Executive Officers Chris and Neil the three soon agreed that John’s creative ideas and expertise in organisational management would be invaluable for the success of Element Society. “I was attracted to Element due to its enthusiasm and ambition to grow. Although it’s still a young charity it has the potential to become a nationally recognised youth organisation. With the drive and commitment that I witness in our employees I am confident that in two years time we are one of the leading youth charities in Sheffield and the organisation of choice for many young people.”

Background to Success report has found that only 29% of white working class boys from poor neighbourhoods stay in education after their GCSEs, supposedly due to a combination of low family income and geographic poverty. Read more about the report here:
