Getting good audio at conferences and shows is a nightmare (also good steady video, angles, light, colour balance etc). I pretty much give up trying, so now just whack my camera in auto-everything mode and use the shotgun mic when getting such impromptu interviews. You can't ask an impromptu guest to spend 10 minutes dicking around setting up wireless lapel mic, mixer for you own voice, level checking etc. In my latest microphone videos with Doud Ford for example, we spent a good 20 minutes dicking around getting the audio setup and working, and still goofed it.
Yes Dave - and what adds to the audio muck is a large open room with plaster walls and wood floor, filled with nerds who love to talk about their stuff! Oh wait - that's the GOOD part! :-)
