So this past Monday, Crystal Matrix the Mechanical Nano who Fuses Flesh and Steel, Keavy the Graceful Glaive who Masters Weaponry, and Dravos the Clever Jack who Works the Back Alleys discovered that they'd been followed. A new player, and character, has joined the group.

Addie is a Charming Jack who Crafts Illusions, originally from Qi but having her horizons expanded through extensive travels with her father in a traveling troupe of performers. She learned her talents in the School of Hard Knocks. Dravos has the (mis)fortune of being able to see right through her illusions and trickery. She's along for Baasch's money.

The group descended the trapdoor, and puzzled over strange barred doors they discovered with no obvious means of egress. A sound in the darkness lead the group to find a tiny hairy white ape-like abhuman. The creature lead the group deeper into the strangely crafted subterranean tunnels beneath the tower of the black rays.

They stumbled upon a small tribe of creatures related to the tiny one. The use of a translation disk allowed Addie to decipher their speech, and she came to realize the creatures were begging the group to depart before they aroused the ire of their Metal Master.

Describing what sounded rather like slavish living conditions did not make the party want to depart. Instead, they steeled themselves to confront this metal master and free the druuj as the creatures called themselves.

Looks like we'll be adding a newbie player on Monday night to join the adventures of Keavy the Graceful Glaive who Masters  Weaponry, Crystal Matrix the Mechanical Nano who Fuses Flesh & Steel, and Dravos Clever Jack who Works the Back Alleys. Should be interesting. I'll be wondering what she's going to play.

I am also thinking perhaps I'll buy into the Reaper minis. Not sure what's going to fit the characters (other than the Fuses Flesh & Steel one for the Nano), but they seem to have an excellent supply of non-Numenera minis that might work as well.

I'm quite taken with the Murden mini, might have to pick up a couple of those. I miss playing with minis, it's been self-printed paper tokens for a long while now.

I have a mystery plotted for the PCs to explore, as they head into the City of the Missing. What else is Guran missing, by the way? A cure for the strange black rays that have been issuing forth from the foothills of The Black Riage and afflicting livestock and townsfolk with strange mutations. It all begins with the first chapter of my Numenera campaign Strange Ways, entitled Blackray.

Anyway, happy gaming all, and we'll see what happens come Monday :)

Last night's surprise session of D&D finished up character generation using the Basic Rules instead of the pregens provided with the Starter Set, and began the  introduction to Lost Mine of Phandelver.

The protagonists are:
* Cardove Lightouch, female Halfling acolyte Cleric of Sheela Peryoyl
* Sergor Bersk, male Human folk hero Rogue
* Evender Greycastle, male Human folk hero Wizard
* Dakar Rumhallin, male Dwarf soldier defense Fighter
* Eowyn, female Sun Elf criminal Rogue
* Arya Willowsong, female Wood Elf acolyte archery Fighter

So far the PCs have traveled from Neverwinter at the behest of their good friend Gundren Rockseeker with a wagon full of goods bound for Phandalin only to run into a Goblin ambush, defeat it handily, and find out to their horror that Gundren had also been ambushed by the same goblins as he'd forged the trail ahead of them. The session ended with the scouting of the Cragmaw Caves after hiding the wagon they were protecting in some foliage.

Overall, there were positive responses to the gameplay of the new edition of D&D, and we're looking forward to another session now that chargen is completed. So in two weeks, I'll have another update on the play experience of Lost Mines of Phandelver after we've played again. We have two GMs currently, and next week will be the Pathfinder GM's turn to run a session.

"Remember that time you had fought your way down to the bottom of the dungeon, and you were low on healing potions and all injured and you saw a dragon in front of you, laying on its hoard, eyes glinting through the thick darkness? And collectively, even though your characters and tired and beaten up and abused and could easily go home, hire an army, come back and kill this thing with minimum risk, you say – “Fuck it, let’s do this. Imagine the stories.”

Strive to be like that at all times. Imagine the stories, great and small, and help each other tell them."

MASSIVE ARTICLE ABOUT TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING ALERT -. (Edit: Since I published this piece a few months ago, an awful lot of people have looked at it and several of them have complained about the swear words in it. If you're upset by profanity, I've written a version with all the rude bits removed ...

I'm kind of disappointed in the fact that I preordered The Strange and the Strange Players Guide in May, paying around a hundred bucks with shipping and all that, and find out that a friend of mine has walked into a store and picked up a copy of the core and the players guide today before my copies have even arrived. And I don't have access to the PDFs on the MCG store like I was supposed to go preordering.

Oh well, Numenera and D&D are keeping me pretty busy anyway right now.

Strange Ways begins...

Upon the road from Shallamas to Guran, our intrepid explorers encounter first-hand the horrifying mutations caused by the mysterious Black Ray.

A herd of innocuous beasts called ukkruhd are discovered unattended by Dravos, a Clever Jack who Works the Back Alleys. As he watches with morbid fascination, the creatures are struck by a pulsing black wave of energy. At the point when the normally non-violent creatures begin attacking each other, Dravos withdraws to warn his companions Crystal Matrix, the Mechanical Nano who Fuses Flesh and Steel, and Keavy, the Graceful Glaive who Masters Weaponry.

When they moved closer to investigate the origination of this strange ray upon the urging of the merchant Baasch, Crystal Matrix's iron heel crunched upon the gravel underfoot loudly and drew the attention of the morphing beast that remains. It charged them, breathing noxious fumes upon the group.

A fighting withdrawal into the foothills of the Black Riage left the group at the base of a strange iron tower, as Keavy struck down the beast. Their foul opponent seemed to melt into the group into a pile of goop from the inside out. Catching their breath and licking their wounds, the group explored the base of the iron tower, finding no entrance until Dravos stumbled upon a trapdoor leading down?

More next Monday, as our explorers head down deeper into the rabbit hole...

Tonight I'm going to spring a surprise on the Thursday game group. Basic D&D and the Starter Set. The pregen sheets are all used up for the home game consisting of my two sons and my fiancé, so there will be some character creation with the Basic Rules and then a break into Lost Mines of Phandelver.

I'm thinking I will have to throw in a few bonds for the group to tie them into the adventure, and to speed character creation I'll use standard array, the quick builds for equipment, and roll off on traits, ideals, and flaws.
