In the just released EIP report, North Carolina’s overall electoral integrity score of 58/100 for the 2016 election places us alongside authoritarian states and pseudo-democracies like Cuba, Indonesia and Sierra Leone. If it were a nation state, North Carolina would rank right in the middle of the global league table – a deeply flawed, partly-free, democracy that is only slightly ahead of the failed democracies that constitute much of the develop...

so if they repeal the aca, they want to replace it with something? so we're swapping one giant government bureaucracy ... for another? and asking the taxpayers to foot that bill - as they have for all the votes to repeal? aca is bad because it's socialism, but they want to replace it with...... another socialist government program? a better socialist program? why not just amend or add to the existing one? wasn't it a repeal and a replace with nothing to appease big insurance and big pharma? do they even know why they are voting or what they are voting for? they don't want more socialism but the only way to replace the aca and make it fairer and work better is to go single payer for everyone.

Here’s to the new year. May she be a damn sight better than the old one, and may we all be safe, well and loved when she’s over.

The book in my hands looks great. It feels solid, and it looks polished. I can't wait to get part 2 out there to finish this part of the story.

Not to mention Orlando Gibbons, Dorothy Wordsworth, Clara Barton, Humphrey Bogart, Conrad Hilton, Cab Calloway, Anwar Sadat, Rod Serling, Carlos Castaneda, Karl Rove, Annie Lennox, and a host of others listed in the WikiPedia I know even less about.

Two of many significant events struck me as especially relevant:
1815 – The Handel and Haydn Society, oldest continually performing arts organization in the United States, gives its first performance.
1826 – The Eggnog Riot at the United States Military Academy concludes after beginning the previous evening.

I'll be 69 in January and I still remember clearly the moment the parlor doors were slid open and I saw my first Christmas tree. And the look on my mother's face, watching me. I also remember that Christmas when I was 17 and refused to go Midnight Mass with the rest of the family.

To begin with a vague, abstract idea, and materialize it in the world around us, that's the "incarnation" that still inspires the holidays. No matter how poorly it may reflect the majesty of the divine, even in the most absurd gifts, our love for each other makes us willing participants in the cosmic dance.

Isaac Newton was as much a theologian as a physicist. According to one source, he wrote more about the Bible and theology than science. Not to mention alchemy.

And, according to History.com, Isaac Newton was born on January 4, 1643, in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. The difference in dates is apparently due to adoption of the Gregorian calendar shifting things about. Just as some other birthdays have been shifted about. For convenience.

(Boop!)

Love this place. Waiter is a hoot. Never had bad food - a generous selection of burgers sandwiches and salads. Good prices. Can slow down during busiest times with the small crew, but it has never been a serious issue. The attention to the customers and portion sizes make up for it.

Pleasant, helpful crew helped me find the stuff I needed even though I didn't really know what I was after. Whenever I go downtown, i now always detour into what we affectionately call "the purple store."
