Is anybody planing on leaving ANY resources for our Kids? Grandkids?

That's good +Ryan Cuz we won't be making any more plastics with out petroleum

yeah, just when you thought we kicked the habit it rears its ugly head !!!

I agree that we will have to stop, but are you aware of the repercussions? Economies will collapse, industries will be crippled or die and ALL but the smallest groups of isolationists will have to live at a drastically different level of comfort that they currently subside. I’m not saying that I’m against it, but I am saying that there are SEVERE ramifications that we will have to address. Don't persue this lightly.

It is impossible to go cold turkey but we should have been weening ourselves off the crude when Carter first gave that magnificent speech in the late 70s.
Reagan put a stop to that and the Dems have been fought tooth and nail against the change by the GOP and corporate Oil Barons and their lobbyists every step of the way.
Of course you also have to consider the fact that some Dems are in the Oil Barons pockets too.
But we DO NEED to get the ball rolling on our rehabilitation as soon as possible.

jajaj tooo great :D. he should've been doing this in a tank and invading every country in the world... u know... make it realistic ^.^

It's crazy alright +Shantalle Williams
Especially since it's true.

It is one very sad aspect of this nation, our addiction to oil and the very slow and stalling process to get free of the addiction.

Meaningless cartoons are not going to solve any problems. The whole world runs on fossil fuel now. You want to stay in your house, grow your own food, and chop wood for heat? The problem isn't that the country is mainlining oil, it's that the alternative energy sources are more expensive and have their own set of problems. It would be easy to build a plutonium powered car with a few RTGs and electric motors that would run for 40 years without refueling, but it would cost several million dollars and present some environmental hazards. The Nazis made gasoline from coal in the late 1930s, but it was expensive. Oil is just the cheapest, most convenient source of energy, and until it runs out it will be what powers the world.

It wouldn't be so bad if we were using our own oil, instead of using Saudi Arabia's!

Are you to say we are the only country using oil? I'm getting tired of stuff like this being so heavily focused on US only.

I think we need to recognize that we already have a lot of oil in the US already. We just need to stop worrying about other countries.

We're not going to run out of oil overnight. As oil becomes more expensive, we'll move to something else the way we moved to "rock oil" when we began running out of whales. (HT to PJ O'Rourke)
Mo Go

That is why the they try to rein Iran from harnessing atomic energy. Once the know how is attain, it could be the superpower of energy in that region. now that's what those people don't want! Imagine Iran selling energy to the region like what happen in Europe with Russia! Just a though...silly maybe?

We in America use one third of all the oil in the world.
We do have oil here that is shipped overseas out the back door for profit while coming in the front door is oil from other sources.
WTF ?
Let us tell our leaders under no uncertain terms that we will no longer tolerate this game.
They are playing a game of monopoly with our future.

Thats right. Keep on using the oil. That's just what the word needs. Ignorant merkins.

Just a matter of whom has the energy to develop his own plans.

@Derek You do know we export about 25% of the amount of oil we import? Oil is a global market, local source has nothing to do with price it as it is a globally traded commodity, and thus we sell our oil off to other countries as well as importing it from foreign sources. Also, the number one supplier of US oil is Canada.

@Adam We aren't the only country using oil, but the fact that we consume more than twice as much oil than the next highest country (China, who has 4 times our population and uses a considerable fraction of their oil on industry rather than personal consumer use) is indicative of our "addiction" to oil.

+Adam Foster The bias you perceive is grounded in the problem that the US has around 20% of the world energy consumption while it only is 5% of world population. More in scale: The per capita energy consumption in the US is twice as high as in the EU. The US have a lot higher incentive to actually engage in dubious political action to achieve access to natural resources because it is a lot more dependent on them. Of course, this all depends on the question if the US would be able to produce enough energy while relying only on their own resources (and not doing extensive damage to the environment for generations to come for the sake of a few dollars). But that is heavily debated.

And use what instead? I work 45 miles from home. An EV (Electric Vehicle) would get me half-way to work. Then what? And even if it DID get me all the way there, no one here in the midwest has charging stations. What if I'm called in on a Sunday, and it takes, say, and hour to fix what ever is wrong? Do I wait around for another seven hours to complete the charge? It's just not a viable solution yet. All this high-falutin' talk is all fine and dandy, but hardly based in the realities of life.

+Michael Cox What would be nice is an electric car with a gas generator so you can keep going after discharging.

I don't think Uncle Sam wants oil... I believe is opium.

ever thought that the Earth replenishes crude oil like natural gas? I bet no one has thought of that. Go try some algae I guess.

Except that picture should depict the world, not Uncle Sam. The demand for oil (and a lot of other limited commodities) is being driven by Asia right now. We aren't the bad guys here. For that matter, neither is Asia, but I digress.

"

We do have oil here that is shipped overseas out the back door for profit while coming in the front door is oil from other sources.
WTF ?"

That is not what is happening. When you refine oil into gasoline, diesel, et cetera, you only have so much control over how much gasoline comes out. The oil we refine is heavy, so we produce a lot of diesel. Which Europe uses a lot more of than we do. So we sell them diesel, and they sell us gasoline. And when you see politicians and newsmakers saying how "we export oil," that's your sign to know that they're liars and morons.

+Michael Cox and the realities of life as we know it are the result of the apparent abundance of oil. Nice little trap, or, as Ollie would say, "here's another fine mess...."

So true. Until we put real plans and process into place to get of oil, we will forever be hooked on it. Not only for fuel, but oil is the basis for all of our plastics

I agree! Our nation is blind, and glutenous!

graphic? What's more common than drug abuse...since the 60s?

it is as clear that needles have points, as it is unclear why the evil - looking Uncle Sam is doing it to himself, or with whose oil....

however, from the comments and rejoinders it is so very clear... that the Blame Game continues....

We are a commodity based economy. US is based on the value of Gold. Brittain is based on Pound Sterling (silver). Ford originally made green machines that ran off of water. We never used petrolleum fuels until the invention of the combustible engine. The average city speed limit is 30-40 mph. Oil is unneccessary as a fuel. We are not a fuel based economy. We are being lied to. Are dependancy is fear based. Are current pump prices are base on the best guessed estimates of projected per barrel price and not current consumption. We are being stolen from. Even the governement is blind to this. We need to wake up... hold ourselves accountable. Be responsible... and take control of our lives and our families future out of the hands of corporate autocracy. Tell GW no more!

They tried to make us go to rehab we said no, no, no.

And we know that story turned out, right?

@Sonny Luca, America did away with the gold standard years ago.
Now gold is just a safe haven as it is in all other markets.

So +Eddie Conlon, what do you drive? Or do you just walk everywhere and ride public transportation? #globalwarming

There is a lot more to oil than just fuel, besides, this is now a global situation with the emerging counties expanding their economic base. Think out side of the media cacoon and be rational, or else we will be the next third world nation. +Joe Bielski III - Commercial Financing / Leasing

OK...thats a little freaky..but it is to the point....and sad but true!!

I think everyone should stop complaining on a Google+ picture because nobody is going to change their view on the matter because of somebody else's comment, nor is a comment here going to affect the issue.

or people could go back and start walking what the heck?? frys is right around the corner people!!

+Sonny Luca don't forget that you have to burn something to heat the water to make a steam engine go. I don't know what Ford used, but I would geuss coal, which may be worse than oil.

Alternative energy sources my seem expensive now but in a few years the price of solar panels will have dropped considerably and they will become even more efficient.
It's not just oil that is America's and the worlds problem.
It is also coal.
We cannot just stop using these energy sources for the world would collapse but that said we can start with a stronger enthusiasm than people have now.
The Energy Barons are afraid of losing their control and will fight every new effort taken with all of their might.
They fear the day when people will no longer have to pay electric bills or go to a gas station, which will be the case when every home and vehicle has the the capability to gather and store it's own constant source of renewable energy.
Including the heating of water, in response to a comment in the thread.
Clean energy can also be used to heat air in the home, replacing the need for natural gas.
The notion of a coal and gas free world is not only possible but NECESSARY for our future.

Wait... so, what's in those barrels? I don't get it.

ok uncle sam is geting hight off oil and not saving any for the next gen that wants to get high basicly

No one ever thinks about what actually removing the oil is doing to the Earth. In your car oil is a lubricant and coolant as well as fuel. That being said no wonder seismic activity is increasing right along with the temperature. Nothing is left for cooling and lubricating the crust and mantel.

blue you hit it right on the nose people can be stpid sometimes (a lot of times

If the country wasn't so afraid of nuclear power we could have a hydrogen economy and be pointing the finger at the rest of the world.

right on the money jessica that has my next point

Oil prices will never go back to an acceptable price. Congressman are all investors first and leaders second. People need to stop investing in oil companies and buy stock in companies that aid economic growth

and what the hell r we breathing when this oil is realst/consumed ever thing about that

Yeah let us keep be dependent on foreign resources until you can no longer afford food.

its not even realy about the money cuz they can print more and more of that every day its about power over the people

Why do we always torture/tease Uncle Sam in historical cartoons/comics?

They need to harness wind from the upper atmosphere in the form of balloon type "wind mills". There is wind constantly moving in the upper atmosphere no matter the latitude or longitude. It's visually evident on the most calm of days when the clouds cross the sky.

i seriously don't get why people do that kind of stuff

it's all about OIL addiction ... thanks for such smart image

SOLAR, WIND, WATER, is all we need.
Why cant people realize this ?
It can be done. In twenty years we can change the whole make-up of the worlds energy grid.
It was done once before a little over one hundred years ago.
At the start of 1900 cars were a novelty and oil was an exotic new source of energy. By the mid 1920s it became the major source of all advanced countries power and the car replaced the horse after thousands of years.
Shit, the industrial revolution only took fifty years for coal to replace wood.

Maybe if OIL was replaced with DEBT...

I'll share it on my FB account if you please Mr Eddie :)

Solar, wind and water will NEVER, NEVER supply what is know in the power world as "baseload" power. For this reason, we need to quit all the tree hugger crap and find ways to use coal, gas and nuclear more efficently.. and cleaner...

and hosrital bill or just bills in all

Remember... Buy Canadian.

I agree that we need to end our addiction. No question about it. Statistics however are often a method with which we manipulate facts. Consider if you will that while we may consume 20% of the world's oil, and only comprise 5% of the world population, we also have a much higher standard of living than the rest of the world. Would that ratio be so undesirable if, for instance, Bolivia or Nicaragua had the same solid infrastructure in their countries as we have here? If the people there had as many cars per household as we have here? I think that these statistics, so casually thrown around by people, are only true because of how grossly underprivileged much of the rest of the world is.

That is a totally negative way to think +Eric Snead
You gotta have more faith in the innovative spirit of man.
It always seems harder than it really is when confronted with decisions of change.
It can be done and if more people get motivated and stop thinking in the way that you are, we will see a change in a few decades.
Technology is advancing every day and with support of people and their leaders it is more than only a possibility.
First thing that needs to be done is to get rid of the obstacles.
The GOP and the lackeys who support them.

+William Remski part of the reason that oil is less expensive is because of the HUGE tax subsidies the receive. Solar and wind have not gotten a fair shaker in this country because of three oil lobbies.

Bill, step away from the fox news, just step away...

So what do you think about that report that said that we EXPORTED more oil products and gas than we IMPORTED last year???

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhh. . .. thats kinda creepy and yet it turns me on in this really creepy gross way... what the hell am I talking about anyways?

It's not anti USA +Heath Patterson it's anti oil.
But if Americans are gonna keep sending their children to kill and be killed in the Middle East and ruin whats left of our own country in the quest for oil and coal then a graphic like this is just what the doctor ordered for Uncle Sam.
Rehab baby.

SOLAR, WIND, WATER, is all we need.

America needs to start drilling and get rid of this BS President.

+Noble Six If they kept printing and printing money we'd be in a depression like Germany before the second world war when they were trying to pay reparations. But I do see your point, we are run by an elitist system and if we took away 3% of what the top 1% made each year I'd bet our national debt wouldn't be so high.

+Eddie Conlon I totally agree. But it's not going to happen anytime soon with all the oil USA is sitting on. Unless Obama gets another 4 more years to destroy this wonderful country.

Needs a bread line for the total win.

Your a misguided man +Heath Patterson if you think more drilling is the answer.
Oh, and who should we have for president, one of the four stooges running on the GOP ticket?

Oh lets blame BUSH for everything. He is always the 1st person to put alllllll the blame on. That was so 3yrs ago. Obama needs to be a Leader not a Ruler!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

a very poor analogy. It's about energy, not drugs

Listen you can not tell me that if Obama told the world that we are going to start drilling for oil tomorrow that gas wouldn't go down.

Right now, the technology is just not there for any feasible power options other than oil, coal, gas and nuclear... You people see solar panels on houses and think that you can stick one of those on a hospital or manufacturing plant and thats all they need... WRONG. It will be great once it is but its just not there yet... Do some reading in REAL books and magazines, technical articles from people who are educated about these things and not just dreamers who want a perfect world then just expect it to happen because thats the way they want it....

yes, very true, but it's hardly a simple American problem. visit a developing country and wonder at their addictions -- or Beijing, for instance...

I agree...very greedy raice thee U.S.A...

Yes i can +Heath Patterson.
No amount of drilling would curb the greed of the Energy Barons or quench their lust for power.

You do realize that the Energy barons control the worlds governments, don't you ?

I blame everything on Obama. That started when he started shoving this health care down the our throats and making it a law. Who the f does that? Obama does. He is a ruler and a dictator that needs to go. This man spends out tax dollars on vacation after vacation. He has spent more money in 3 yrs than ALL of the former presidents combined, That doesn't piss you off? SMH

@blueblue berry that part where you said "all" yeah, that's a lie.

Like I have said for a very long time. It is no longer 'The United States of America' instead it is 'The United States of BUSINESS'

let's use a little less of this oil, and let's do our part in taking back and protecting our environment.

We seem to forget that a lot of the mess was caused by the previous administration. But we blame the person in front of US. the problems in the middle east were caused by the destabilization of that area. Yes there are nuts/tyrants in that area, but they do keep things pretty much under control. Don't forget these are a tribal people, and have been at each other's throat for centuries. Stop dumping all that money into the tribe WE like. Just MY thoughts.

Dictator Obama shoved this health care agenda down our throats. Sounds like a Dick-tator to me.

We've been on this drug for about 30 years.

What do you think would've happened if McCain got elected?

I ride my bike to work because this addiction is too expensive. Saves me $100+ per month. Fuck Oil #PedalPoweredPatriotism

I think this country is ready for a new President. Dems are turning their back on him.

I resent the original poster of this thread! Done no research, wanting to take American oil field jobs away from American families. Taking food out of children's mouths, clothes off there backs and roofs away from there heads. Look up Bakken oil shale, look at how many families you want to hurt, please be better people and not some band wagon jumpers. Kill oil and that kills Americans. BOOO!!!

Oil will be around for many years to come. There is plenty of oil in the U.S. New drilling techniques have enabled us to extract alot more oil than we ever imagined. There is a reason the other energy sources are called ...alternative. Because they are alternative to oil. Solar is pricey and only works during day unless you have battery storage shed. Windmills have been around for hundreds of years and with no or slow wind, they are useless. Drill here, drill now!

+blueblue berry if we use food as fuel, food prices will go up and more people will be starving... also lots of energy wasted making food into fuel...

I actually make plenty of money. I dont go out and blow it on bs items. I save. I have solar on top of my house, I recycle 70% of my garbage, I reuse water from the house to water the yard. I try. What do you do to save?

Shouldn't it be the citizens cash he is injecting into his veins?

+Terry Prevatt you don't need to post a comment three times to make a point
+Heath Patterson, Obama has taken far less vacations than any of his recent predecessors.
Also, any rant about healthcare is not pertinent to this post.

Yep, take the drug away replace it with something healthier.

Well you realize thats us so you people shouldn't be talking!

sad thing is, other places jacked up prices on gasoline with taxes and increased mass transit capacity to push people away from cars (reducing reliance on oil and decreasing traffic congestion) - yet America will never let that happen...we'll whine (even though we're still 50% less for a gallon than anywhere else), we'll cry, Presidential candidates will say they'll fix it (to make stupid people who believe it's possible to vote for them), - but in the end, we'll never figure it out...we like to drive our cars and enjoy our freedom too much ...not to mention we believe we deserve lower gas prices.

But I digress!

+blueblue berry your so much better than us with you Green Car.. U win. Oh and have fun when Obama the Ruler takes more of your riches because in his eyes you make to much.

oh ya what mode of transportation do the uber liberals use. I defy everyone of them to stop using cars planes, trains, buses and peddle their respective asses to work on their bicycles, otherwise knock off the crap and start drilling !!!!! Drill baby drill me i'm sticking with my suburb and Harley!!VRROOOOM

+Rene Hunter it's not easy to do, but the end result is worth it. Drilling here does nothing but send our oil to China.

Rehab? Now? Negative... Brazil has to sell every single drop and we'll need of good costumers like U ALL!

Yeah your right. When I was a kid they showed us what would be when the 21st century came, you know flying cars with nuclear engines, spaceflight with pulse drives and other neat things, but because big oil said no ( to keep their profits ) and politicians wanted to keep their phony boloney jobs, well they didn't happen.

Lauchlin, sorry bub it does not.

And, that's why the only answer is violent revolution. Anyone who disagrees is the enemy as well.

I have a Jeep, to answer a question put to me in the thread.
I don't expect us to get off of oil immediately but we can start to invest more in research and development for newer better resources.
Ours, or should i say the worlds, addiction to oil is no fault of any one individual.
I would point the finger at the pushers and enablers, as in any addictive circumstance they usually hold the most blame.
Energy Barons and the puppet politicians who've allowed them the control they've gotten over the years.
If we humans started getting serious about alternative energy back in the 70's after we reached peak oil, by now the world would have been well on the way to a better future than what seems in store.

Pollution and wars over oil.

Well I commend you on being a teacher and my wife is the same. I have 2 business and just burns me up to see more and more of all this hard work getting sipped away by all these regulations.

+Lauchlin MacGregor that can be stopped, if we started to drill lowering the cost of crude to ourselves we could become self sufficient the capitalists could get to work investing in green energy we would not only become self sufficient but the most powerful country.Having our oil and green energy too! The government needs to stay out of venture capitalism.

actually most middle eastern oil is exported to the EU, China, and Japan. The US imports most of it's oil imports from Canada, Venezuela and Mexico with some of it coming from the middle east. If you are talking about total energy consumption then you have to include electricity in that. Very little oil is used for that in fact a much smaller portion than is generated by wind and solar. Frankly energy policy is just way to complex of a subject to be dealt with by a cartoon. Frankly all political cartoons are nothing but flame bait. If they reenforce your world view you love them if it does not you hate them. They are in fact nothing but simple minded drivel.

Well you realize thats us so you people shouldn't be talking!

Then my country (I mean Russian Federation) is a drug (oil) dealer? :)
P.S. If you will replace flag to Russian one and oil to money then you'll get main addiction of Russia.

+Eddie Conlon what mode of transportation do you use? Green energy is fine but our country is too big to be supported by it. Who would you propose to develop all the green power that would be needed to run this country? The government? Right now Green Power is too expensive and absolutely impossible to support the masses. Your living in a green dream bubble my friend. This country need to start drilling, self support, save money from within by lowering taxes so the entreprenuars can get to work developing affordable green energy where applicable. That would put people to work while moving in the right direction to help our environment.

Fill the whole desert of sahara with solar cells Free energy!

I hate this pic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its offensive!!!!!!!! :(

Here is a crazy question. How is it possible for oil demand to go down and prices still go up? If something is counter intuitive then guess what... its that way on purpose.

+Rene Hunter. Could you come up with something besides the same blah, blah, blah that's been crippling this country for the last 100 years? Um, lowering taxes for businesses didn't work during Bush. What makes you think that doing it now is going to make a difference.

Yes. Developing Green Power is expensive now. That doesn't mean we have to hide behind a rock while China passes us up on energy development. Incidentally, China isn't making the lame excuse that it can't support the masses and it's too big. They have 3 times the people we do and that isn't stopping them.

The power of this country is its ability to dream. That's what got us to the moon and created the internet that you are on right now. If anybody is living in a bubble, you are. And that bubble is keeping your old expired ideas from moving us forward.

Its not oil that is the problem, nor the use of it. The problem is the lack of investment in infrastructure for the refinement and distribution of oil and petroleum based products (oil, gas, plastic, fertilizer, synthetic fibers, etc.). If you really want to cut emissions you have to get rid of coal fired power and replace it with nuclear, or else you are doing more damage to the environment through hydro-electric dams, green space dispersal through solar cells and wind farms, etc. Here in China an electric car is 8 times more pollutant than gas powered ones because of all the coal fired power plants needed to supply electricity. America has enough oil and natural gas on its own soil to last a projected 250 years, but our regulations and laws prevent its extraction and we haven't build a new petroleum refinery in 40 years (advances in technology would make newer ones more efficient and less environmental impacting). If we seriously want to keep the lights on and cut emissions we must use nuclear until something better is discovered and practical/reliable enough to implement in a large scale distribution system. Everything else is hyperbolic rhetoric and refusal to look at the situation with an open mind and realistic approach, as proved by the last 11 years of failure in wind/solar technology developments.

Every single industrial nation is reliant on oil. Pretending it is only an American problem is ridiculous.

But every country is doing it. We want to be with the "in-crowd" don't we?

thats a pretty grusome pic but i understand whast its trying to say "

+Rene Hunter as much as I'd like to agree (and it's logical to agree), the truth is that oil (and gas) prices are set on a global market. We actually export more oil based fuels than import in the US, currently. As stated in other comments, energy policy is much too complex...and the energy companies like it that way. Oh...and the energy companies hold all the cards. Increasing our use of alternative energies may diversify enough to reduce demand on any one energy, but most likely will be locked into the same crap we do now. The only difference is that sun/wind/muscle power is not a finite energy.

+dub sac not sure where you get your information, but see above.

I can tell the people on the Right by their comments, and ridicule and insult are not a way to have a debate. I even seen one person plus his own comment against me.
I find it very funny, and yet sad, the clear line drawn between those willing to admit our addiction and those who are in denial.
Those who admit, are willing to get started with the change needed and those in denial want more oil.
Just like the world of junkies, some face their addiction and other are on a path to self destruction.
For the second time, because some people make comments before or without reading the previous comments,
i drive a jeep and again i will say the change needed cannot happen overnight.
But get off of the idea that more drilling in America will lower the price of gas.

Does anybody know what greed and deception are ?

It seems to me there are quite a few people who get their information from Fox Noise.
Please do not interject that noise in this comment thread.

.

I am always amazed at the people that blame the Right for every problem. I understand that there is a dependence on foreign oil. Did the right force you or anyone to buy oil or petroleum based products. Two questions:
1. Are you actually doing something about it? Like selling your Volt and giving the money to the USO.
2. Aren't you glad you were not born 2,000 years ago in Sparta? None of the left males born there lived. Because warriors don't have time for people that do nothing but talk. America will always be run by people that are doers not by commentators.

Want to make a change then do something.

Replace oil with entitlements or debt, and its even more true.

They try to make me go to rehab, and I said, no, no, no...

That is the point of this post and discussion +Ron Sewell, Sr.
To motivate and get people thinking.
It seems that you feel threatened by thought and motivation.
Reactionaries are doers without the benefit of forethought.
All good problem solvers first THINK, then do.

Your fantasy of Sparta is wrongly placed in this comment thread.

I hate that the United States like needs oil! We seriously got to change our life style instead of complaining about whats going to happen in the future.

No more of your liberal trash on my page please.

To everyone suggesting we use corn for fuel there are a couple of facts that are commonly overlooked.
1. America consumes 20% of the worlds daily 0il production just driving our cars.
2. If every square inch of the U.S. were used for growing corn we still would not have enough to produce the ethanol necessary to power American transportation.

+Jessica B Sorry. Oil is NOT a lubricant in the earth's crust. Seismic activity is NOT increasing.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seismic_activity

"Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests."

Just a bit of reading to be going on with.

Try coming to China and see what the future holds for users of oil. They will be sucking the current oil producing nations dry in 15 years as they, and India, rapidly increase their automotive industries. We are sitting on massive oil fields yet we refuse to extract any of it, maybe when China and India consume 70% of the global supply we will begin to drill, but by then it might be too late or costly to compete and we fall into the bottom of the G20, but then again I think that is what many progressives are really hoping for anyway.

Oil is finite - eventually we'll run out. Drilling more does nothing to change that....let's leave our kids with the problem...why the hell not :\ And seriously - when the global market decides price - drilling more does nothing....only when we're the last refuge for oil will things actually work in our favor in the US

Woot!! I love America!! Thank goodness for Oil.. It gave us the most powerfull Country on earth.

+Roy Echeverri Your post was as ignorant as the Obama bashers.

It is a complex problem and needs to be addressed without delay. There is no one single answer or silver bullet but if we take the problem seriously and start working on it together world wise, the technology needed will surely be developed.
The solar and wind along with water can be improved through research and development.
A good start would be to take the billions of dollars in tax breaks and subsidies that goes to welfare for the Energy Barons and give it to science for research and development.
Drill baby drill is not the answer.
The greed and power that permeates the energy barons world is too absolute.
More drilling will not bring down the cost of gas.

I want you all to know I am doing my very best to help out the best that I can. How about everyone else. R We Trying.

Thinking of solutions then working them out is a start.
But while we plan how to get out of this mess the reactionary do'ers keep doing the same problem causing actions that compile the problem with yet unforeseen problems. WTF?
The endless cycle has to slow down in order to stop.
I cant believe how many are for more drilling.
Do they want to live in this endless downward spiral till we hit rock bottom?

You Palin parrots need to stop watching Fox Noise.
Drill baby drill ? Are you people crazy ?
Do you know how stupid that sounds.
Baby talk, that's what that is.
Children talking among adults.

All industrialised nations are dependant on oil. It takes big dollars to develop alternative fuels to the point of being a viable commercial replacement A slow, but deliberate, well thought out long-term strategy (spanning presidents) will be required to develop the technology needed. Because oil is so endemic, the risk of an all out, myopic, sprint to replace it will result huge economic disruptions and mega $ wasted. This can't be a left vs right issue, we're all in it together.

What's the deal with this fracking oil that we are exporting at an increase of 50%? I guess the cost of the export is why it is worth it. Wouldn't it be worth it to keep the oil?

+Eddie Conlon - you're right, though drilling will always continue - as so many things are made from oil....they can't stop until it's gone. One thing of note - oil companies are buying up other energy sources because they know their resource is finite. Once oil is done, they'll control what's next. The only way out is to modernize how we use energy...R&D - as you said. I like your POV though...it's good to think outside the box.

Great Idea! Except ExxonMobile runs America so they can make $40 billion a year in profit from oil.

You replace the oil with $$ very easy.

Its a quite serious situation for the country and for the world as a whole. I have never seen so many comments expressed on a single cartoon.

If we seriously started research and development when Carter first suggested we might now be well on our way to realizing the goal of sustainable renewable energy.
Solar has been around since the at least the 60's and should have been heavily invested in from the start.

Wait until petrol hits $4 a gallon like it did last time. Then people get serious about looking at other solutions. I think the solutions will have to be very radical and way out side the box, like the superseding of the auto mobile with different transport ideas. Auto mobiles is an old concept and they are no longer very effective. I have seen the traffic congestion photos and you can't tell me that is not poor efficiency.

While I don't have the answers, a one idea would be to upgrade the telecommunications (mainly the internet and mobile phone towers) infrastructure to world class fibre optics. This enables teleconferencing and telecommuting as well as connecting rural communities while reducing the need for travel. Upgrade trains and the networks to be faster than travel by auto mobile.

People looking to "drill baby drill" (arrghh must you use such lame buzzwordy phrases) are scared about losing the status quo. Blaming Obama is a cop out dictated to you by your string pullers, it also says you are neither educated or creative enough to come up with solutions. It will not be someone with your mindset that fixes your country.

Russ i wish i could give you more than one plus
Everything you said is well worth considering.
Traffic is a mess and trains are not being taken seriously by most, as they should be.
The day and age of everyone owning a vehicle is, whether people like it or not, coming to a close.
People are generally afraid of change, so it is no surprise that many will fight it kicking and screaming the whole way.
There are some who will be screaming "drill baby drill" with their dying breath.

I will say this... I am proud that we are discussing and discovering allot here. Thank you.

Thanks Eddie.

An interesting coincidence, before I saw this post on G+ I briefly checked out the Chevron wiki page on an unrelated issue and I found the section on Standard Oil and General Motor's conspiracy to dismantle streetcars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy). From that, I found that the patent for NiMH (Nickel-metal Hydride) batteries are expiring in 2015.

If you want another thing to add to the list, it's overhaul of the patent system. The invention and innovation game isn't open to new comers because of the massive legal arms of the Big Business corps. Any ideas that would present a risk to Big Business's profits will be met with a barrage of patent lawsuits and other dirty tricks (hell, I'd go as far to say your life would be in danger).

It is no surprise Russ that big businesses would protect their monopolies at any cost.
If legal means do not work then they call out the big guns.

When there is billions of dollars at stake you can be sure that lives are at risk.

The bottom line is the people of the world need to get serious about getting kicking the oil habit.

You are so very right +Thomas Brockway but so many people refuse to make the change.
Some refuse to even give an effort to change.
Either because they don't believe it's possible or because they do not think the oil situation is a problem.
Their refusal comes mainly from believing the rhetoric that comes from political sources, whether it be news or from the politicians themselves, who are allied with big oil.
