Americans believe libraries are important community institutions and profess interest in libraries offering a range of new program possibilities. Yet, even as the public expresses interest in additional library services, there are signs that the share of Americans visiting libraries has edged downward over the past three years.

Colin Rhinesmith, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies, and Brian Whitacre, Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics (both at Oklahoma State University) conducted excessive research on how to get better broadband adoption rates within low-income, seniors and youth populations. They join Craig Settles to discuss their findings and explore options for getting these populations on board with broadband. #GigabitNation

Great example of library innovation in a way most people may not associate them.  That's the point, libraries are the most flexible institution and therefore should be most responsive to community needs. Especially those driven by tech tsunami, like support of small business and startup's.

Today, we are launching the Ushahidi Version 3 open source code to the public. v3-launch-Graphic.png#asset:4326. Why is this release different from the rest? First, we have finished all the essential features of the platform that make it a valuable and superior tool to V2.

NSFCloud: On the other end of the continuum of pervasive access to the (information) internet is the emerging area of (national) scientific cloud platforms. In the US, Chameleon and CloudLab are two investigative efforts underwritten by the National Science Foundation. A workshop was held last year and many of the presentations are available at the bottom of this post: https://www.chameleoncloud.org/nsf-cloud-workshop/ | UPDATE | I just saw this post on the White House Smart Cities Initiative Smart Cities Week [September 15-17, 2015] http://www.cccblog.org/2015/09/14/white-house-smart-cities-initiative/

It has been my observation that there has been more meaningful convergence of late between libraries, makerspaces (some with 3D printing etc), and training at library spaces (often computers and coding as related to education and jobs). These computing services increasingly move toward adoption of cloud models; to my mind, that makes libraries potential compute labs, among other things.
The US federal government both funds and sponsors efforts (thru National Science Foundation, national endowments for arts and humanities, Library of Congress, etc.) to try to connect existing social assets such as libraries. Efforts such as Next Century Cities or Internet2 types of initiatives might serve as mental models. The motivation is often to encourage collaboration between research universities (which also happen to have libraries/services) and to accelerate technology transfer for economic development purposes, and such. Once a meaningful national compute grid is built, any library with sufficient connectivity will be just another node on the grid, imo. One fedgov partner, US-Ignite, explains part of this kind of vision in their CloudLab Evangelist job description https://www.us-ignite.org/blog/2015/5/us-ignite-cloudlab-evangelist/
