This is the op-ed piece I wrote for the Kaufman Interfaith Institute about the importance of doing interfaith service projects, which was published in the Grand Rapids press this week. For some reason, it wasn't put up on their online site.

Bored on a Saturday afternoon. Any hangouts going? Or people who want to start one?

Any hangouts going on that wouldn't make me want to climb a clock tower with a rifle?

The TWIS group met at Britannia in San Jose on Sunday evening and we had a fine time IRL.

"I'm going to make a video about you" = "I'm telling mom!"

Oh no, not that. However shall I survive being "pwned" by a weapons grade dumbass "exposing me" to his literally dozens of subscribers? Welcome to the Google+/Youtube junior high school drama club.

I got an invitation to join a hangout that is all about G Man today. I had a tough choice. I could do that or I could hit myself in the balls with a sledgehammer. I chose that second, far less painful option.

If someone doesn't start a band called Steamed Vagina, Gwyneth Paltrow's entire life will have been lived in vain.

I thought Unrighteous Penis would be the best band name.

Hey, you know what would be even more boring than going into a G Man hangout? Watching a bunch of other people in a hangout talking about a G Man hangout. Yes, he's a fucking idiot, so stop giving him so much space in your head rent-free.

+Ed Brayton Touché. But I'd appreciate it if you'd actually consider the opinions of others. :)

Annoying people. And I'm a pretty darn good amateur chef as well, especially if it involves large hunks of meat and a smoker.

Story
Tagline
I write, therefore I am.
Introduction
I am a writer, speaker and secular activist. After spending several years touring as a stand up comic, I tired of explaining my jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the primary outlet for the voices in my head. I own the Freethought Blogs network and am the voice behind the popular blog Dispatches from the Culture Wars. I also write a quarterly column for Secular World magazine about blasphemy laws and freedom of speech around the world. Lastly, I am the Media Relations Coordinator for the Foundation Beyond Belief.

I am on the board of advisers for the Center for Inquiry of Michigan and am the co-founder and past president of Michigan Citizens for Science. I've appeared on the Rachel Maddow show twice (see video here and here), the Thom Hartmann show and I'm fairly sure I'm the only person to ever make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN (Part one, part two). I've also appeared on Point of Inquiry and many other podcasts and radio shows.

I am fortunate enough to be invited to speak to conferences and organizations around the country. You can see a long speech I gave about the 2005 Dover "intelligent design" trial here.

Lastly, I am writing a book about the plaintiffs in church/state cases -- school prayer, creationism in schools, etc. -- and the almost inevitable abuse and violence they receive from their local communities. The book is called By Their Love: Violence in Defense of Christian Privilege.
Bragging rights
In 2009, I received the Friend of Darwin Award from the National Center for Science Education. And in 2011, I was named Freethinker of the Year by CFI Michigan.
