General Discussion  -

Just a quick introduction to the group!

I'm Ed, (boikdaddy on waze) and I'm a City Planner and resident in the Phoenix West Valley.   I've had a waze accoutn for a while, but new to editing because I desired to see the FC of the roads in the west valley match the various cities adopted circulation and classification maps.

So far, I've made some changes to city-adopted collectors by making them primary streets as per the wiki.  nnote advised that I should clear changes here prior to continuing so I'll carry that conversation in Map Editing.

I took it upon myself to make edits to many of the L1 roads that I'm very familiar with to correct alignments, traffic circles, etc.

Anyway, hi all!

The map is good but is certainly omitting some known arterials and collectors. Can you share his email?

When classifying streets, make sure you take a look at adopted general plans for the various cities.  In these plans they usually have an adopted functional classification map or an adopted circulation map.  These maps designate the local, collector, arterial, parkway, freeways.  Some of the roads shown are future (10-20 years out) so I would only use them for existing roads. I would also consider these to supercede any information on classification you may have for city or county maintained streets (ADOT controlled roads should use ADOTs classification).

This post is VERY PHOENIX WEST VALLEY-CENTRIC.  I apologize for not having info on other communities:

I'd like to continue this discussion to ensure that I follow, and others who follow me, class the roads properly.

When local jurisdictions classify roads they do so based upon the road design characteristics and anticipated future traffic capacity based upon traffic impact analysis.  These serve a different, but related, purpose than the FWHA official classification.

Cities do circulation plans as part of a state mandated General Plan. We designate roadways to meet a certain classification either now or in the future.  Roads that are constructed are based upon this circulation plan.  In Buckeye's circumstances, we are building numerous "major arterials"-six lane, 45-50mph roads- on essentially every 1-mile section line in the municipality.  These roads are expected based upon past studies to carry upwards of 40,000-70,000 cars a day at buildout.  They are major highways in every sense other than being state designated highways and meeting the waze wiki's rigid criteria.

If the purpose of navigation software is to keep inter-city and longer-distance traffic on the roads intended to carry that traffic and to keep re-routing from sending people down local streets which are only designed for low-speeds and 1,000-2,000 cars at the very maximum, I feel we should be utilizing municipal and county approved circulation plans and functional classification maps (if available) to class roadways even if it doesn't align with the ADOT supplied official FWHA classification map.

My thoughts have most applicability to metro Phoenix where all the local jurisdictions have agreed to very similar classifications for the arterial and collector road network.

Thoughts?

I spent a couple hours downloading a free gis client and clipping out relevant layers to give me a much more robust highway map for the Phoenix metro. The default roadway maps looked like they hadn't been updated in almost 16 years. Half the freeways were missing!

Thanks for making this app super customizable!

I pulled the tiger files and painstakingly did a long SQL query to select out the interstate highways and then all local freeways by name. There was no other way to do it. I'd be happy to share it for KIWA OR TPHX. I still need to do arterials but may have a better source than TIGER.

It's basically a low end Walmart. (Owned by Walmart). Located next to a Sam's club. Generally affordable and good quality grocery products. We haven't been to Super Let yet but I've heard super lay has a bigger selection.

Reasonably comfortable rooms, quiet enough. Kids loves the indoor pool. Don't expect a well appointed high end hotel. It's pretty basic, but was a good place for an overnight stay.
