No. 6 in our series of inspiring ICDL candidate stories comes from South Africa. In 2009, ex-radio presenter and a specialist in radio broadcasting, Adrian Davids from Eersteriver in the Western Cape of South Africa, became the first blind student to obtain ICDL certification. No. 8 in our 20 things you didn't know about ICDL series is from the UAE. The Emirates Aviation College in Dubai is in the shape of a plane, which contains an ICDL test centre because the airline wanted cabin crew to diversify their skills and improve their job prospects after they leave the airline industry. No. 7 in our 20 things you didn't know about ICDL series is from Europe. José Manuel Barroso, the former President of the European Commission, became the 9 millionth ECDL candidate to receive ECDL Certification in February 2009. This highlighted the necessity of keeping investment in digital skills high on the public policy agendas of all Member States of the EU along with the success of the ECDL programme. No. 11 in our extraordinary ICDL testing centre series comes from the very remote Spitsbergen Island in Svalbard, which is a Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean; it is the world’s northernmost settlement with a permanent human population. No. 10 in our extraordinary ICDL testing centre series is from Malaysia. Standing as the first and the oldest non-profit school for the blind in Malaysia, St. Nicholas' Home in Penang has lent its efforts to help improve the lives of the blind and the visually impaired for over 88 years. Established in 1926, they have provided over 15 different programmes which are all looking to help the blind and visually impaired in varying areas such as education, independent living skills, social and communication skills, and ICT. Digital Skills have been taught through the ICDL programme, and through the Home’s effective use of technology the students realise their individual capacities and move beyond their impairment. No. 5 in our series of inspiring ICDL candidate stories comes from Austria. Stefan Bogdanovic is a real hero. Stefan was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2004. Because of his diagnosis, Stefan had to leave school and give up football, his biggest passion. Stefan first learned about ECDL certification at the Children’s Cancer Help Institution in Vienna, so he decided to dive right in. You can read more about Stefan's story here: https://goo.gl/7P64Gh.

Since 1996, the British Computer Society has registered 29 candidates for ECDL Certification with the first name Elvis and 18 candidates whose last name is Trump. There have been no Obamas in sight! No. 9 in our extraordinary ICDL testing centre series comes from the Falkland Islands, a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean. The Falkland Islands provides vocational learning and development to its 3,000 residents through their government Education Department’s training centre. The aim of this centre is to raise the level of knowledge and the skills base of young people and adults of all abilities, to support the development and capacity for a self-sustaining economy on the Falkland Islands.
