Yesterday Ola Al-Qaradawi was transported from her solitary confinement cell in Al Qanater prison to a criminal court located in the police academy in the Torah prison complex. Today her husband Hosam Khalaf was similarly brought from his cell in Torah prison to the same criminal court for his detainment extension. The judge ruled to extend both of them for another 45 days.

Today Ola was transferred to the prosecutor’s office from her solitary confinement cell in Qanatir Prison. Lawyers waited for her arrival but she never showed up.

Egypt has summoned the ambassadors of Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Britain in protest over a statement they made expressing concern over the fate of a detained human rights lawyer.

The move Sunday came after the countries issued a rare public statement Friday regarding the case of Ibrahim Metwally Hegazy, who focused on the issue of forced disappearances and was himself arrested in secret on Sept. 10 at Cairo Airport on his way to a U.N. meeting on the topic.

Egyptian activists condemned American actress Helen Hunt on Tuesday for her participation in a government-organized youth conference they say is whitewashing authorities’ appalling human rights record and suppression of free speech.

She then reportedly signed her name beneath a 38-page statement in Arabic, upon request, believing she would be able to leave the airport afterwards and begin her two-week break by Red Sea.

Instead, she was put into a cramped cell with 25 other women, where she has remained for almost a month.

Now running the country with an iron fist tougher than that of any preceding Egyptian president, he calculates domestic and foreign policies on the grounds that western powers will do whatever necessary to prevent the collapse of his regime—because they believe that would also mean the collapse of Egypt.

Such a collapse could yet come to pass, in no small part due to the botched efforts of those same powers.
