Women’s Health
At any age, women’s hormones should work together harmoniously, like an orchestra. If something is not functioning properly in the female system, the melody produced is out of tune. Most women are surprised to learn that the symptoms that they have been experiencing are signs of hormonal imbalance. Traditional Chinese Medicine can easily and effectively treat symptoms such as irregular menstrual periods, irritability, weight gain, hot flashes, diminishing sex-drive, vaginal dryness, and skin problems.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a therapeutic procedure consisting of the insertion of very fine needles on specific points in the body with the purpose of promoting physical and emotional harmony, as well as diminishing the perception of pain. Today’s technology has developed fine, disposable needles, which have made modern acupuncture a virtually painless, extremely safe therapy. The acupuncture needles are less than an eight of the size of the needles employed for injections, and are used only once.
How does acupuncture work?
The theory of TCM states that energy (Qi) flows through pathways (channels) throughout the body. It is believed that disruption of this flow causes diseases. Acupuncture improves and balances the circulation of Qi, thus enabling the body to regulate the metabolism of some hormones, neurotransmitters, enzymes, and other biochemical substances, which include natural painkillers such as endorphins. The National Institutes of Health states that “stimulation by acupuncture may also activate the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, resulting in a broad spectrum of systemic effects. Alteration in the secretion of neurotransmitters and neurohormones, and changes in the regulation of blood flow, both centrally and peripherally, have been documented.” Acupuncture stimulation affects nerves and causes beneficial reflex responses, and possibly re-patterns the nervous system.

Herbal Medicine
The extensive Chinese pharmacopeia commonly used in the course of treatment provides a detailed description  of  hundreds of herbs, animals, minerals, and their nutritional values and energetic characteristics.  These herbs contain vitamins, natural anti-inflammatory steroids, and antibiotic substances for local or systemic treatment. Usually herbs are prescribed in combination to enhance their properties, to ease their effects, or to create a desirable action on a specific part of the body. For example, to treat a condition, a group of herbs (a formula) with warming characteristics, or one with cooling effects, might be prescribed. There are hundreds of traditional formulas that have been used for thousands of years by TCM doctors, which are available in pills, powders, extracts, tinctures, and raw form for decoctions. Herbs such as, Ginseng, Astragalus, Ginger, Turmeric and St John’s Wort.

Nutrition and Health

“The truly good physician…first treats the patient with food; only when food fails does he resort to drugs.”
-Sun Ssumiao

Applying the TCM principles to a patient’s diet and nutrition will accelerate  the process of recovery as well as aid in the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. Since foods have active energetic and medicinal properties, they can enhance or obstruct the effects of treatment. TCM practitioners will not only consider the biochemical value of foods, but will also recognize their energetic properties.
