This explains the EU and what the Brexit means in a simple cartoon and straight forward explanation.
A simple explanation of why it's a huge deal the UK voted to leave the European Union.

I found this interesting: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/06/immigration_and_brexit_how_a_rising_tide_of_european_immigrants_fueled_the.html

The key point seems to be that the rules were not the same all over the EU; different countries had different rules affecting entry to labor markets and access to public services.

And the last decade or so has indeed seen Britain become a highly sought-after destination for less-skilled European immigrants, thanks to the structure of the U.K.’s economy and its public policies. Recently, Martin Ruhs, an expert on international labor migration based at Oxford University, argued that free movement across the European Union is greatly complicated by the fact that different member states have different approaches to labor market regulation and the welfare state.

This picture is awful for so many reasons... namely the fake background and that everyone is barefoot. Oh yeah... and guns.. wait, what?

Oh wait it gets worse "It is up to Americans to protect America".. Well that's not dangerous at all....
Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore posted an image of her family's Christmas card, in which family members in the photo are armed with guns.

This fantastic website shows us correlations between unrelated things.

Nicolas Cage movies and number of pool drowning.... spurious... Or meaningful? :)

This is incredible.
BAFTA-winning animator Jonathan Hodgson said Rabbit and Deer—a short film by Péter Vácz and Attila Bertóti—"is a stunningly directed and beautifully crafted play on the universal conflict of emotional incompatibility." He's completely right. Some of the best 15 minutes I've spend in front a screen this year.

"In the first study designed to assess how partially 'humanizing' brains of a different species affects key cognitive functions, scientists reported on Monday that mice carrying a human gene associated with language learned new ways to find food in mazes faster than normal mice."
By Sharon Begley. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Although it's far from the sort of brain transplant beloved by science fiction enthusiasts, scientists have taken one step in that direction: they have spliced a key human brain gene into mice. In the first study designed to assess how partially ...

By 2013... "The Dutch chimps had actually adopted the Edinburgh call for apples"

Whether the change is in vocabulary, accent, or a little of both, it appears to be a striking example of vocal learning.

"This is the first bit of evidence which might suggest that actually, it's a much older capability, that maybe our last common ancestor might also have had," Dr Slocombe said.
Chimpanzees can change their grunts to communicate with new companions, according to a study of captive animals moved from the Netherlands to Scotland.

Oooo... interesting, writing a grant application right now to study whether people over- or under- estimate animals' mental capacities.

"The findings suggest many survey participants likely fit the first question into their language understanding and, when they get to the next question, move in their language network to figure out how close it is to the previous question in order to respond"
Scientists who study patterns in survey results might be dealing with data on language rather than what they're really after -- attitudes -- according to an international study.

Researchers at Princeton University have begun crystallizing light as part of an effort to answer fundamental questions about the physics of matter. The researchers are not shining light through crystal – they are transforming light intocrystal.

Nail polish that changes colour when exposed to roofies in your drink. So clever!
An experimental nail polish line called Undercover Colors can do more than color your nails to match those shoes: it can tell if your drink's been spiked

A hopeless idealist.
Introduction
I am an avid follower of many geek topics including science/psychology research, medical discoveries, stop-motion videos, all things Google and Android, gadgets, gizmos, and most things shiny.  I post about all these things.

I enjoy cooking, baking, the science of food/nutrition, and basically all things food. Also, I like taking pictures. I especially like taking pictures of food, nature, and shiny things. I tend to post most of my food/nutrition stuff to a private food circle, since I know pictures of food isn't everyone's favourite thing to see in their stream. If you want to be in on the food circle, let me know.
