One of the simpler (and better) explanations of useful methods to actually make big data useful:
- use small data (surveys and subject experts) to find the "why" and holes in the big data
- don't forget about things you can't measure well...they can be important too (i.e. defense in baseball, transit reliability, etc)
- use subject experts to help know what questions to ask and what variables might help answer them

Not an April Fools...

A few interesting facts I learned from this article discussing the giant tree that exploded in the Arboretum during the big thunderhail yesterday:
1. the tree literally "boiled" into exploding
2. lighting fixes nitrogen in the ground

DOS is now easier to use than ever.  Swipe key is a great improvement, but emoji support would really bring it home.

So I'm in an Indian city right now (Mumbai) - and I am curious about people's thoughts about urbanization trends in India and if and how public services and infrastructure can keep up (or at least not have the gap widened).

Free the market or free the city government to make decisions on behalf of everybody?

I have opinions on this as it relates to the US, but would be curious about people's thoughts about the situation in India.

I found this interesting set of writings, but they are now 7+ years old
