Rejoice, reuse, reshare.
Earlier this week, Oxford's Bodleian Library announced that it had digitized a 550 year old copy of the Gutenberg Bible along with a number of other ancient bibles, some of them quite beautiful. Not to be outdone, the British Library came out with its own announcement on Thursday:

Internet Cat Picture Contest

Good news, everybody! I'm preparing the second edition of my book ( http://amzn.com/1430263768 ). The drop date for this has not yet been determined - it could be anywhere from October to March - but I'm already combing through my material and images for the refresh. Lots of the graphics are getting a much-needed upgrade, and many of the pictures will be swapped out. Which brings us to the topic of internet cats.

In Chapter 4: Where Your DAM Lives, I discuss servers, hosting and storage. The picture below is used to illustrate an unsafe server environment. I need a new and better image for the book. That kitten tech is working in a case with a 3.5 disk drive for pete's sake.

Help me update my work and make your cat famous. Submit your best pictures of your cat participating in server maintenance. I will make the best of these pictures public on G+, and one will be included as the new Figure 4-2 in the second edition of Digital Asset Management: Content Architectures, Project Management, and Creating Order Out of Media Chaos. Of course once your image is chosen, you'll have to sign over the rights to publish your image in my work. We'll negotiate on payment. It won't be much, but we can figure out something in addition to a new copy of the second edition.

At my blog today, some thoughts on the way magic is depicted in fantasy; in particular, the difference between magic with rules and a more free-form kind.
Recently best-selling author Dave Farland wrote this article about the cost of magic. It's an argument I've encountered before, and the short version is, everything must have a cost. If you cast a spell, the power has…

For those of you who have been following me for a long time, you've often heard me grouse about Wikileaks being well behind the mainstream media on reporting abuse on Iraq. What you haven't heard me grouse about is the fact that Snowden was well behind in pointing out NSA abuses, too.

Wiebe, Binney, and Drake were well ahead of Snowden in pointing out the NSA's mass-wtapping programs. Jewel v. NSA revealed the existence of UPSTREAM.  Almost everything which Snowden eventually published had been diligently reported on by the middle pages of middlebrow newspapers, and then studiously ignored.

I just remembered today that the telephone metadata snooping had been revealed seven years before Snowden, in the article linked below. There is a lesson here. I am not sure what it is.

Vector Graphic became one of the best-known computer manufacturers of its era. It went public. Then the IBM PC changed everything.

Democracy thrives when people’s voices are heard in the halls of Congress.
We like to think that this week, democracy got a little better. A few days ago, we launched Democracy.io, a tool that lets people send an email to their congressional representatives, on any topic they wish, through one super-simple interface.

NYC DAM Meetup about Product Photography and DAM on 7/14, with new organizers  http://meetu.ps/2FsdmT #LearnDAM #reDAM
Many organizations get their products photographed to help sell them online and/or in stores. Often, there is a high volume of items photographed and even more photographs taken. Many organizations take advantage of using a DAM to keep the at least best photographs and help distribute them to all the different channels to market those items. Find out what is involved and how this is done by hearing from this talented panel of experts: Deanna Bedo...
