blog post: reviewing Wired for Story, a book about writing with a neurological basis. #writing
I read this book over a few weeks, working my way through it a chapter or a few pages at a time, and using some of its ideas in my outlining and goal-seeking work for Song. Despite mentioning it before, I wanted to post a more comprehensive discussion since it's an interesting concept for a book ...

blog: how cycling has helped my running. #running
I've been cycling to the day job a bit the last few weeks. The goal was to try and build up my cardio after the gross insult of stomach flu in June since I have a half marathon to run in less than three weeks – the Beat the Blerch run up near Seattle. The good news is that it appears to have ...

writing today about fantasy roleplaying concepts.
#writing   #roleplaying
The Savage Worlds fantasy sourcebook that I mentioned last time turned up*. I haven't had time to really dig into it but I will post more about the content and how it fits into my plans for a fantasy game for my boys at some later date. In the meantime, I wanted to write a bit more about fantasy ...

this is exciting - the advice has always been to not send credit cards or passwords in email because it was plain text and therefore insecure, but if we're starting to get an actual infrastructure in place where encrypted email is not only available but normal, then that is no longer true.

Also, great for dealing with spammers: only accept encrypted email, and the spam load mostly goes away (because really - which spammer is going to encrypt their messages when it identifies them?)

In which I suggest that private-messaging-for-everyone is on the horizon.  With lots of screenies. Unfortunately, not short and not at an introductory level.
It’s like this: Everybody ought to be able to use strong cryptography any time they’re going to send anything to anybody. Ideally it should just happen, by default, but let’s take baby steps. This is a messy ramb...

today's blog is about how worldbuilding keeps happening to me.

#writing   #roleplaying
Apparently, I can't help but do some world building. Looking through the Savage Worlds Fantasy Companion, there is a lot to like: many weapons, interesting races, and a bundle of professional edges that emulate classes. All well and good. What it doesn't have is much in the way of setting ...

blog today about what I am working on with Song at the moment.
#writing
My work on Song at the moment is about outlining. I have a story and characters with interesting nooks and crannies but I am working both on figuring out how to layer the story so that it is sufficiently interesting, and how to render that story so that the reader will be as engaged and excited ...

I am back to blogging again.

Today's blog is about story telling in games.

Storytelling in Games: Summer 2014 Edition. Posted on 08-Aug-2014 by Dunx. I'm always looking for storytelling elements in the games that I play. Here are three games I have not written about before, and some more thoughts about a game I discussed at the beginning of the year.

Today's blog post is a short meditation on good writing practice, and how I am struggling to follow that at the moment.

#writing   #notwriting
Good Advice. “Write every day.” It's one of the basic tenets of the writing life: if you're not writing, you're not a writer, and you need to write every day to keep learning, to stay in touch with what you're writing, and just to finish stuff. It also echoes the good practice of tackling big ...
